The men's marathon at the European Athletics Championships 1978 took place on September 3, 1978 in Prague , capital of what was then Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic ).

There was a double victory for the USSR. Leonid Mossejew won the race with a new championship record in 2: 11: 57.5 hours. Nikolay Penzin was vice European champion ahead of Belgian Karel Lismont .

Record improvement

With his time of 2: 11: 57.5 h, Leonid Mossejew, the new European champion, improved Karel Lismont's European championship record by 1: 11.5 minutes.
