European Athletics Championships 1982 / participant (GDR)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The GDR DVfL had nominated a total of 68 athletes, 35 men and 33 women , for the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1982 . The nominees included seven defending champions from Prague and eight Olympic champions from 1980 .

successes

The GDR team took first place in the medal evaluation with 13 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals, a long way ahead of the team from the Federal Republic of Germany. The women won a medal in 10 out of 15 competitions and the men in 13 out of 20 competitions in which they competed. Bärbel Wöckel, Marlies Göhr and Marita Koch were able to win 2 titles each, whereby Wöckel also won a silver medal and thus became the most successful GDR athlete. Furthermore, GDR athletes set six European championship records. Outstanding, however, was the two world records over the stadium lap in both the individual and the relay. Marita Koch was involved in both. Koch himself and the Czechoslovak Jarmila Kratochvílová are so far the only runners who have run faster than the world record of 48.16 s set in Athens.
