The women's 400-meter run at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held from 19 to 21 August 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .

European champion was the German European champion from 1990 and vice world champion from 1991 Grit Breuer . She won ahead of the Czech Helena Fuchsová . Bronze went to the Russian Olga Kotlyarova .
