The women's 4 x 400 meter relay at the World Athletics Championships 1987 took place on September 5 and 6, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .

The season of the GDR with the line-up Dagmar Neubauer , Kirsten Emmelmann , Petra Müller and Sabine Busch (final) and Cornelia Ullrich, who was also used in the run-up, became world champions .
Second place went to the Soviet Union with Aelita Yurtschenko , Olga Nazarowa , Marija Pinigina and Olha Bryshina .
Bronze went to the United States ( Diane Dixon , Denean Howard-Hill , Valerie Brisco-Hooks , Lillie Leatherwood ).

The winner's relay, who was only used in the preliminary run, also received a gold medal.

Record improvement

The world championship relay from the GDR ( Dagmar Neubauer , Kirsten Emmelmann , Petra Müller , Sabine Busch ) improved the existing World Cup record in the final on September 6th by 1.10 seconds to 3: 18.63 minutes.
