List of the most prominent mountains in Europe
The list of the most prominent mountains in Europe is headed by the mountains of Europe with a notch height of over 2000 m. The notch height or prominence of a summit is the difference between its height and the highest notch (reference notch) to which you have to descend at least to reach a higher peak. In addition to dominance, it is an objective measure of the independence of a summit.
Mountains in the Caucasus are marked with an asterisk (*), as they are counted as either Asia or Europe, depending on how the European continent is defined. The Azores and the island of Jan Mayen are also often included in Europe; if they were included , the Ponta do Pico on Pico (2351 m) and the Beerenberg (2277 m) appeared in the list. The most prominent mountain in Germany is the Zugspitze at 1746 m, which would be 60th on the list.
