List of the most prominent mountains in the Alps
The list of the most prominent mountains in the Alps is headed by all mountains in the Alps with a notch height of more than 1500 meters. Mountains in this category are sometimes referred to as ultra prominent peaks .
The notch height or prominence of a summit is the difference between its height and that of the highest notch ( reference notch ), up to which you have to descend at least to reach a higher peak. In addition to dominance, it is an objective measure of the independence of a summit.
In addition to the relevant notch, two reference mountains are given:
- The Prominence Master is the more prominent and higher summit closest to the reference gap along the course of the ridge, which can be reached via this gap without having to descend any deeper.
- The Island Parent is the highest peak that can be reached from the respective reference chart via a path that is entirely higher than this reference chart. It is the highest mountain beyond the reference chart, whose own reference chart is lower than that of the peak under consideration.
