Eschweiler originals

Josef Schmitz or Jupp Schmitz alias Sportwettenjupp (born July 19, 1931 in Eschweiler; † September 3, 1997 in Eschweiler) was a reporter, photographer, local painter and Eschweiler original. On his 65th birthday, the Eschweiler newspaper wrote about him that he belonged to Eschweiler like Tünnes and Schäl to Cologne and the leaning tower to Pisa. He was a sports photographer at the Tivoli in Aachen and at riding tournaments, later a local reporter for both the Bote an der Inde and the Eschweiler Nachrichten and, last but not least, a carnivalist, co-founder of the Eschweiler ice hockey club Grizzlies and an active handball player . For a number of years he ran the pub at Bei Etagejupp on Dürener Strasse in the old town of Eschweiler.

He painted and drew numerous pictures, many on the walls of houses and rooms in private apartments, restaurants and pubs in Eschweiler. His preferred motifs were buildings and landscapes from Dürwiß, Alt-Eschweiler, Hastenrath and the parish of Lohn. He has thus impressively captured the dredged home . Thirteen of his works, some of which were found with great effort, were published in a 2006 home calendar.

As an Eschweiler original - over two meters tall and with a shoe size 52 - he cycled through the city every day with a camera around his neck. He got his nickname floor jupp from the chairman of his carnival club Rote Funken when the chairman said that there were three Jupp Schmitz in the club and that he was now called floor jupp to better differentiate himself , as he could reach the first floor with an outstretched hand.
