location
The municipality of Eppelborn is located in the center of the Saarland and houses its geometric center. The State Office for Cadastre, Surveying and Mapping (LKVK) calculated the geometric center of the Saarland, also known as the center of gravity of the Saarland polygon. A center of gravity was determined by averaging around 9428 outer points, the geometrically irregular polygon Saarland, and this resulted in the geometric center of the Saarland with the coordinates 49 ° 23.0582 'north latitude and 6 ° 57.2200' east longitude Habach district.
Districts
The municipality has been divided into eight municipal districts since the territorial and administrative reform of 1974 . All of today's districts were previously independent communities. The population figures refer to the registration data of the municipality of Eppelborn as of February 1, 2018.

history
The Eppelborn area was already settled in Roman times, as evidence from excavations suggests. Eppelborn (formerly Ippelbrunn ) was first mentioned in a document in 1235 and was the capital of the lordship of the same name, which belonged to the noble family von Ippelbrunn . Via the heir's daughter Irmgard von Ippelbrunn († 1425), the local rule fell to her husband Friedrich von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads († 1419) and his family, later by inheritance to various noble houses. Her son, the Eppelborn local lord Friedrich von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads (1401–1462), was widowed as a Franciscan and is the grandfather of the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Richard von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads (1467–1531), as well as the famous Worms Bishop and Elector Palatinate Chancellor Johann XX. von Dalberg (1455–1503).
The current districts of Hierscheid (1200), Wiesbach (1201) and Dirmingen (1281) were also mentioned for the first time in the 13th century. For centuries, the individual districts of today's municipality belonged to the various lords of Lorraine , Nassau-Saarbrücken , Pfalz-Zweibrücken , France and Kurtrier . After the French Revolution , Eppelborn formed a mayor's office with the neighboring communities of Bubach, Calmesweiler, Macherbach and Habach, while a second mayor's office was formed in Dirmingen with Berschweiler, Hierscheid, Humes and Wiesbach. Until 1814 Eppelborn was assigned to the canton of Tholey in the Moselle department. As a result of the Congress of Vienna , the area became part of Prussia in 1815 and belonged to the Ottweiler district in the administrative district of Trier from 1816 and to the Rhine province from 1822 onwards .
In the course of the territorial and administrative reform, the municipality received its present size on January 1, 1974.
Imperial oak
The landmark of Eppelborn, the old imperial oak of 15.60 m high, stood right next to the town hall. A wooden scaffold was built on this oak in 1870 for climbing the tree.
The wooden scaffolding was expanded in 1884 according to the drafts of the mayor at the time, Eugen Schwan. A massive wooden staircase that led up to the crown surrounded the trunk. Seven platform floors with railings were attached to it. The largest was a 10 square meter platform, with a three meter high floor space as a taproom. There was a table, a coffee cupboard, a mirror and a bench in it, and four different drinks could be tapped from one barrel. A miniature cannon, a replica of a fortress and cages with birds were built into the oak as decoration.
An illustration and description of the imperial oak were published in the journal Die Gartenlaube in 1886. There it is also described that an aeolian harmonica is attached at the highest altitude , and this "sends its melodic sounds into the valley, especially surprising for nocturnal hikers".
Around 1900 the entire facility was renovated under Mayor Ballcke. The decayed imperial oak was finally felled on February 9, 1930 "for security reasons".
In 1921 the mayor of Eppelborn-Dirmingen had its own emergency money printed, with images of the imperial oak on the back of the 10, 25 and 50 pfenning vouchers. In 1981, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Post Office, the Friends' Association for Local Lore and Monument Protection chose the imperial oak as the motif for the memorial sheets and reminder letters.
