The Nuremberg University of Music , formerly the Nuremberg-Augsburg University of Music , was founded in 1998 by merging the Meistersinger Conservatory in Nuremberg and the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg .
history
The Meistersinger Conservatory goes back to a municipal singing school initiated by Johannes Scharrer in 1821 . In 1883 it became the municipal music school, which Carl Rorich had expanded into a full-fledged music school since 1914 . Since 1919 it had the status of a municipal music conservatory (1939 state music school, 1972 specialist academy for music and Meistersinger Conservatory).
The Leopold Mozart Conservatory has been a specialist music academy since 1973. It emerges from a private music school founded in 1873, which was taken over by the city of Augsburg in 1922 and was named Leopold Mozart Conservatory in 1948.
The university was previously run by a municipal association formed by the cities of Nuremberg and Augsburg as well as the districts of Middle Franconia and Swabia . The Free State of Bavaria contributed to the financing.
With the establishment law of May 6, 2008, the university was transferred retroactively to January 1, 2008 under state sponsorship. The previous association was dissolved: Nuremberg is being expanded into an independent and full-fledged music college. Most of the Augsburg department was transferred to the new Leopold Mozart Center at the University of Augsburg .
The university building, which originally housed the Sebastianspital (also called "Lazarett" in the 16th century), actually did not meet the requirements of a music college. During the renovation, which began in April 2014, in addition to preserving the building fabric, the rooms were redistributed and soundproofed. There was also a large concert hall in the courtyard. Finally, the kitchen of the NürnbergStift, which was still in the basement of the university, was outsourced.
