Muzaffarnagar is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The area is 4,008 km². The administrative seat is the city of Muzaffarnagar . The district belongs to the wider metropolitan area of Delhi ( National Capital Region ).

history

Timur's army had marched through this region to Delhi in 1399, and its inhabitants fought the invasion without success. Later the area came under the influence of the Mughal Empire .

The Muzaffarnagar district gained notoriety in the 20th century for frequent robberies, murders, kidnappings and social unrest.

population

The population is 4,143,512 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 16.94%. Muzaffarnagar has a gender ratio of 889 women per 1000 men. It has a literacy rate of 69.12% in 2011, an increase of almost nine percentage points compared to 2001. Just under 58% of the population are Hindus and around 41% are Muslims .

The urbanization rate of the district is approximately 28.8%. The largest city was Muzaffarnagar with 392,768 inhabitants.
