NGC 2648 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa in the constellation of Cancer at the northern sky . It is estimated to be 87 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 85,000 ly . Together with PGC 24469 , it forms the interactive pair of galaxies Arp 89, which is cataloged in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a large companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on March 19, 1784 .
