It was produced by ABC Studios in association with Lionsgate Television from 2012 to 2017 . The broadcast of the first four seasons took place on the US broadcaster ABC . From the fifth season, the series switched to the cable broadcaster Country Music Television .

The plot focuses on a number of fictional country singers, the ups and downs of their careers, their family life, and their personal and business relationships with each other and with other actors from the entertainment industry, local politics and business. Furthermore, socio-political topics such as alcoholism , poverty , mental illnesses such as BAS and PPD , racism , sexism , abuse of power , drug addiction and homophobia are taken up in the series. It first aired in the United States on October 10, 2012 on ABC. In Germany, the series has been shown on FOX since February 2013 . The series ended with the 16-part sixth season, which premiered on January 4, 2018 at CMT. In addition to the good reviews for the pilot episode , the critics particularly praised the script by Oscar winner Callie Khouri and the performances of the two leading actresses. Both Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere received Golden Globe and Satellite nominations for their performances .

A large number of well-known television and radio presenters, songwriters, managers (for example the Rascal Flatts ) and musicians such as Elton John and Kelly Clarkson had guest appearances as themselves during the series. The Grand Ole Opry has also played a central role in the series for almost a century the musical center of the country stronghold Nashville . Some actors (including Clare Bowen , Chris Carmack , Lennon & Maisy Stella and Sam Palladio ) were given the opportunity to appear as independent musicians in the real Opry show due to the success of the series and the quality of the music it performed.

season 1

The leading actresses Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, 2013

Rayna Jaymes has been a well established country singer for over 20 years, but her last album did not sell well and she has been touring with little audience. Her record label suggests that she go on tour with the young and up-and-coming country singer Juliette Barnes as the opening act, otherwise her tour would be canceled and the promotion for her new album would be canceled. Juliette is also not interested in working together because she takes what she wants and is extremely successful. She is the typical teen idol without any recognition value, which she would like to change in the course of the first season with self-written texts. When she steals nail polish and it is discovered that she has an alcoholic mother, she falls in favor of the press and the public.

In order to look better in public, her management forces her to go on a tour with Rayna that puts her in their shadow. To get positive publicity, Juliette goes on a date arranged by her manager with an American football player. The initial antipathy turns into affection. After telling Juliette that he doesn't want sex before marriage, the two spontaneously and secretly get married. When his family finds out, she forces them to have a public wedding. Juliette leaves him standing in front of the altar and flies to a tour with Rayna.

At Rayna, too, everything goes wrong privately; her husband Teddy, who has advanced his political career and is now mayor, has an affair and wants a divorce. The gossip press exploits this and also writes about the affair between Rayna and her former guitarist Deacon Claybourne. Teddy tells the press that neither of them has ever been unfaithful and announces that his girlfriend will be his new financial advisor. When Juliette tries to convince Rayna's bandmate and former lover Deacon to go on tour with them, the two clash and a rivalry ensues on the tour.

Juliette, who is now friends with the alcoholic Deacon, who has been abstinent for many years, gives him a birthday party. There Rayna discovers Deacon's niece Scarlett and wants to sign her as a solo artist. Juliette's mother is also invited to the birthday party, with whom she is slowly getting closer after her successful withdrawal. She relapses at the party. Juliette then organizes a personal addiction counselor for her mother, with whom she begins a relationship and whom she also makes her manager. This is after Juliette's money and blackmailed her with a sex video. Juliette's mother kills him to prevent publication and then commits suicide .

Rayna's eldest daughter finds out that Deacon is her birth father and confronts him. Deacon then speaks to Rayna and gets drunk. At a farewell concert by Juliette for her mother, Rayna drives the drunken Deacon home, and an accident occurs.

season 2

Rayna is in a coma after the accident and Deacon is in jail for testifying that he drove himself. A review shows how difficult it was for Rayna with Deacon and his alcoholic illness and why she kept her fatherhood a secret. Rayna wakes up from her coma and has to deal with a new record boss who wants to poach her artists. Deacon sinks into self-pity; he is released from prison, but can no longer move his arm properly. Even when his doctor tells him that he can play again after therapy, he punishes himself and has his arm put in a cast. Meanwhile, Juliette tries to market her new album.

Production and broadcast

United States

In October 2011, ABC secured Callie Khouri's script for the series and announced the production of a pilot episode in January 2012 . After viewing the pilot episode, the broadcaster gave the green light in May 2012 and initially ordered 13 episodes for the first season. The premiere took place on October 10, 2012 following the ABC comedy block. The pilot episode was seen by almost nine million viewers, resulting in a target audience rating of 2.8. In the next few weeks, however , Nashville lost some viewers, so that it finally reached 5.7 million viewers and a rating of 1.8 in the fourth episode. Despite this drop in ratings, ABC announced the production of nine more episodes, the so-called back-nine-order , in mid-November . In April 2013 it was announced that the producers had failed to produce all 22 episodes on time. For this reason, the first season is shortened to 21 episodes. The first season finale aired on May 22, 2013. The first season reached an average of 5.94 million viewers and a target group rating of 1.9 percent.

In May 2013, ABC extended the series for a second season, which premiered on September 25, 2013. The season finale of the second season aired on May 14, 2014. The 22 episodes of the second season reached an average of 5.34 million viewers and a target group rating of 1.5 percent. Compared to the first season, the losses amount to 10.2 percent for the total number of viewers and 21.2 percent for the target group rating. In May 2014, the production of a third season was announced. The broadcast began on ABC on September 24, 2014.

The fourth season aired in the US from September 23, 2015. In May 2016, ABC announced the end of the series. A month later it was announced that the series would switch to cable channel CMT for the fifth season . On April 10, 2017, CMT announced the extension of the series for a sixth season, which ended the series.

Germany

In Germany, the pay TV broadcaster FOX broadcast the first season from February 26 to July 16, 2013. The station showed the second season from April 29 to July 8, 2014, the third since July 7, 2015. The first two seasons are now included in the video-on-demand offer of the streaming provider Netflix . The complete series can be downloaded for a fee from Apple's iTunes Music Store . So far, only the first season is available as a DVD box in Germany. At Amazon you can now stream the 1st - 5th season in German.

reception

criticism

At Metacritic , the series has a Metascore of 84/100 based on 32 reviews. The pilot episode received many positive reviews, with particular emphasis on the script by Callie Khouri, the casting and the portrayal of Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere. Linda Stasi of the New York Post described the series as "Country Meets Everything About Eva " and goes on to say that Nashville has "hands down the best script of any new fall series."

“The Nashville series is going strong with the pilot. Two strong women who don't let anyone tell them anything in tough show business. But it's about more than that. It's about power, deceit, betrayal and love. The characters are written sensitively and played vividly. To settle into this world should not be difficult for the inclined viewer. "

- Loryn Pörschke, serial junkies Nashville: Pilot - Review

"A must for country fans, but even those who are not a fan of country music will enjoy the series because good actors and good scripts ensure good entertainment."

Awards and nominations

Another nomination followed at the People's Choice Awards in the Favorite New TV Drama category , where they lost to Beauty and the Beast .

At the 2013 Golden Globe Awards , Britton and Panettiere were nominated for Best Series Lead Actress - Drama and Best Supporting Actress - Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie .
