The Hahnenknooper Moore nature reserve is a contiguous bog complex from the Loxstedt nature reserve Stoteler Moor near Stotel and Königsmoor and Plackenmoor near Schwegen in Lower Saxony . Renaturation measures are intended to make the typical environmental factors of bog even more pronounced.

Containment

Use of excavators in the nature reserve Königsmoor
Profiled dam to the water retention

For nine years, the area was dammed up and waterlogged through the use of excavators in the winter months . The dams are threatened by muskrats , who subvert them, leading to water flow and destruction of the dams. They must be checked regularly and repaired if necessary. The water level can be regulated by overflow pipes with pipe bends.

use

Until the 1960s, until the mining permit expired, industrial and rural peat mining was carried out in the Hahnenknooper moors .

After that, the use of the marginal agricultural areas began, the moors were drained and cultivated. The winter scarfing of the vegetation was also prohibited. The created grassland areas were cultivated by the many small farmers. The grasses are of inferior feed value on the acidic meadows, but they met the requirements. Modern agriculture with its large-scale equipment can no longer do anything with the moorland. Noble grasses are required, with a high feed value, but which do not grow on the barren raised bog. Therefore, the grassland areas were gradually no longer cultivated, lost their value and the public sector bought the moor areas and turned them over to nature conservation.

The larger grassland areas in the nature reserves are extensively managed through nature conservation . The grasses are of inferior quality and can only be used as winter fodder for undemanding Galloway cattle , other highland cattle and horses . The rushes and the creeping buttercup are dominant on the acidic meadows . The hay bales must be removed shortly after mowing ; as soon as the fresh grass grows through, the soil is no longer stable for heavy vehicles.

Biotope

By draining and Abflämm ban was a different flora , the myrtle was lush, the Moorbirke increased in mass by pollen and removed from the peaty soil surface water. The pipe grass ( Molinia caerulea ) took over the upper hand, aided by nitrogen influx from the air.

The lower growth - different types of moss , cranberries , heather , True bell heather , rosemary and blueberries - was suppressed by the moor grass and overgrown, then finally selected. The habitat of the native fauna changed.

Wildlife

Up until this time the black grouse had its firm debut. It could no longer cope with the new conditions, the habitat was destroyed and the black grouse threatened to become extinct.

The Lower Saxony State Hunting Association, with the help of its Hegering in conjunction with the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Wildlife Research Department, started a project and poached 522 black grouse in the Hahnenknooper moors from 1981 to 1996.

Since the habitat for black grouse no longer existed, it was not a success. In 1996 the last black grouse released were monitored by telemetry and it was found that after about six weeks all specimens had been killed by foxes, martens, polecats or hawks. The project was discontinued, the black grouse is extinct in these bogs - as in comparable bogs. A corresponding habitat can only develop over decades after the moors are watered .

Hunting law

The right to hunt does not end at the nature reserve borders. Although the district of Cuxhaven and the state of Lower Saxony could form their own hunted persons (area from 75 ha), the public sector leaves the leasing and administration of the hunting rights to the individual hunting cooperatives .

The three nature reserves are spread over five cooperative hunting districts , the NSG Stoteler Moor at Stotel and Fleeste - the NSG Königsmoor at Hahnenknoop and Langendammsmoor and the NSG Plackenmoor at Schwegen .

The hunting in Placke Moor is limited to Ansitz from high status to the dams - the plots are mostly impassable.

Hunted is small game , but you can at any time with wild boar expected. Driving in the nature reserves, even for hunting, is not permitted, but is tolerated on paths where it is absolutely necessary. However, no foreign material should be used to mend the paths.

Precautions

It is forbidden to enter the nature reserves outside of the paths. In the swampy wetlands there is a high risk of death. If you slide into the mud, you hardly have the opportunity to free yourself again.
