Need for Speed: Carbon (short NFSC or NFS Carbon) is a tenth of that of Electronic Arts published Need for Speed series and was published on 9 November 2006 for Windows , the stationary consoles PlayStation 2 , GameCube , Xbox and Xbox 360 , as well as for the portable consoles PlayStation Portable , Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS . On December 6, 2006 the version for the Wii was released, the version for the PlayStation 3 was finally released on March 22, 2007. There are four different versions of the game: The Collector's Edition for PS2, PSP, GBA, Windows and Nintendo DS, the Own the City Edition and the normal version. The Collector's Edition includes four additional vehicles, two new vinyls, six new events and six new tracks, but it is only available in German and English.

action

The story of the game follows on from the plot of Need for Speed: Most Wanted . After successfully escaping from the police at the end of it, you return to the scene after a while in another city and meet Sergeant Cross again , who is now handing Raser over to the police as a bounty hunter. Right at the start, the hard-won BMW M3 GTR in the previous part is destroyed.

In the game you first have to decide on a new car from the three directions muscle, exotic or tuner, with handling, speed or acceleration being superior to the others. Then you first unlock three parts of the city in which you drive level 1 and level 2 cars, which are not very different from each other. During this time you are repeatedly approached by an unknown driver in an Audi Le Mans Quattro who encourages you to keep on driving.

After you have defeated the three sub-bosses Angie, Kenji and Wolf in a freely selectable order, the unknown driver appears as Darius, boss of a fourth, cordoned-off district that has not yet been selected on the map, which has to be defeated and the three sub-bosses hired as a new crew after one of his team members voluntarily joins the player.

From this point on, you also have access to level 3 cars, which in terms of speed and control clearly surpass their predecessors from the other levels. In this part of the series, there is again the possibility of improving the car technically and visually; in the visual area, the option has been introduced to even make your own changes to the vehicle within a certain framework, while the performance tuning of the properties of the spare parts takes into account their technical advantages can customize. For example, for drift races, you can set the car so that it oversteers heavily and choose tires with little grip, while a tightly steering car with a lot of grip is recommended for the canyon races. These settings are available when purchasing the spare parts and can also be changed later after installation.

Gameplay

The gameplay of the game is a further development of the gameplay of Need for Speed: Most Wanted . A clear difference to the predecessor is that the races only take place at night, but the tracks are very well lit. The goal of the game in Need for Speed: Carbon is to maintain supremacy in the fictional city of Palmont City . The player achieves this primarily through race wins. The biggest innovation of the game compared to previous parts is the canyon races, in which one driver chases another down a mountain. However, one must not collide too strongly with the guardrails, otherwise they will be breached. In addition, the drift races were reintroduced, which had been removed with Most Wanted . In addition, in some races you are supported by a freely selectable member of your own speeder crew who has one of three special skills. Another innovation is the so-called autosculpt , with which the shapes of, for example, air inlets can be freely changed.

Gameplay

Events

  • Circuit - The player competes against other racing drivers in closed circuits with a fixed number of laps.
  • Drift - Players must drift around corners to score points along a closed track. Depending on the speed and angle of the vehicle, players get more points. The winner is the player with the highest score.
  • Canyon Drift - A drift event on a canyon route.
  • Sprint - The player competes against other racers on a given track from point A to point B.
  • Canyon Duel - A sprint race against 1 opponent in which the distance between the vehicles is measured.
  • Speedtrap / Radar trap - A race from A to B in which the speed is measured at checkpoints. The player with the added maximum speed wins.
  • Checkpoint Race - The player must reach all checkpoints within the time.
  • Pursuit / Chase - A chase with the police. The player must escape.
  • Free Roam Challenge - Random sprint races with 1 opponent. The player can determine the location of the finish line.
  • Pursuit Knockout (only available in online mode)
  • Pursuit Tag (only available in online mode)

Challenge Series

The Challenge Series puts the player in different events of a certain type and level of difficulty. Unlike Need for Speed: Most Wanted , the player can start with any type of event, although initially limited to bronze events. After winning gold events, the player receives unique spare parts and cars in the Collector's Edition of the game.

Game world

The plot of Need for Speed: Carbon takes place in the fictional metropolis Palmont City .

Palmont City consists of the central downtown area , the southern industrial area of Kempton , the western coastal region of Fortuna , the northern, casino-populated area of Silverton and the eastern city of San Juan .

All regions except San Juan are connected to Highway 142. The outer region of Palmont is surrounded by canyons that are not accessible via free roam.

The Palmont Police Department acts as the main law enforcement agency and patrols all areas of Palmont. The player will find more patrolling units in areas with higher heat levels .

Urban areas

  • Downtown is primarily controlled by Kenji's Bushido crew and comprises five areas - Billings District, Historic Chinatown, Old Quarter, Mason District, and King's Park. Although mostly made up of highways, the city center is also characterized by a large number of tight curves in certain parts of the city.
  • Fortuna is primarily controlled by Wolf's TFK crew and consists of five areas - South Fortuna, Fortuna Heights, Hillsborough, Ocean View, and Palmont University. Since Fortuna is a coastal area, players will encounter many winding roads here.
  • Kempton is primarily controlled by Angie's 21st Street Crew and can be divided into five smaller areas - Morgan Beach, Kempton Holdings, The Projects, Eskuri Plaza, and Newport Industrial Park. Most of the racing events in Kempton take place on the long highways.
  • Silverton is only controlled by Darius Stacked Deck-Crew and is represented by the territories Neon Mile, Canmor Downs, Starlight Strip, Infinity Park, Shady Pine and Silverton Refinery. Silverton offers the player a wide variety of road types such as highways and successive sharp turns. Silverton is the heaviest patrolled police area with heat level 3.
  • San Juan is the only district in Palmont City that is inaccessible in Free Roam mode and has no crew.

Reward cards system

The Reward Cards in Need for Speed: Carbon are a range of unlockable vehicles, body panels, rims and vinyls.

Each card has four independent tasks with a set goal. Fulfilling the requirements for each task is considered a completed section of a map, and mastering all four sections of a map rewards the player with a unique item.

There are 25 cards with a total of a hundred tasks related to a particular game mode, such as: B. Career, Challenge Series or Quick Races. Another 10 maps with 40 tasks related to multiplayer are included in the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game versions.

The game was received rather cautiously in the trade press. On the metacritic.com site, it achieved 75-78 out of 100 points for stationary consoles and Windows. The introduction of a speed crew that supports you during the races is praised. Criticized are the lack of a sense of speed, the night setting, which is getting boring due to the underground predecessors, as well as the sluggish beginning of the game, as there are really fast cars towards the end of the game.
