Nouvelle-Aquitaine [ nuvɛl akitɛn ], German New Aquitaine ( Occitan Nòva Aquitània , Basque Akitania Berria ) is a French region that was created on October 1, 2016 by a resolution of the regional council of June 27. The region was created on January 1, 2016 under the provisional name Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes through the merger of the previous regions Aquitaine (Aquitaine), Limousin and Poitou-Charentes . This provisional name was formed from the names of the merged regions in alphabetical order.
Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest region with 84,061 km² just before French Guiana and has 5,956,978 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), making it the fourth largest region in terms of population. It is divided into the twelve departments Charente , Charente-Maritime , Corrèze , Creuse , Deux-Sèvres , Dordogne , Gironde , Haute-Vienne , Landes , Lot-et-Garonne , Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Vienne . It borders (clockwise) on the regions of Pays de la Loire , Center-Val de Loire , Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes , Occitania and Spain .
The administrative seat of the region is Bordeaux .

Result of the election of the regional council on December 13, 2015:
- List Alain Rousset (Union de la Gauche from PS , PRG , EELV and FG ): 44.27% = 1,037,330 votes, 107 seats
- List of Virginie Calmels (Union de la Droite from LR , UDI and MoDem ): 34.06% = 798,142 votes, 47 seats
- Jacques Colombier list ( FN ): 21.67% = 507,770 votes, 29 seats
