Nizhnevartovsk ( Russian: Нижнева́ртовск ) is a city in the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra in Russia . It is located on the Ob River and has 251,694 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). Nizhnevartovsk is the fifth richest city in Russia.

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, a docking station was set up on the flatter right bank of the Ob, at which the steamships passing there stocked up with firewood. In 1912 the place Nizhnevartovskoye (Russian: Нижнева́ртовское ) consisted of five houses in which eleven people lived.

In September 1924, the Nizhnevartovsky village soviet (in Russian: Нижнева́ртовский се́льский Сове́т ) was founded, and the place now called Nizhnevartovsky (in Russian: Нижнева́ртовский ) officially had the status of a settlement. On September 29, 1964, it was named a workers' settlement, and on March 9, 1972, Nizhnevartovsk was given the status of a city and its current name.

On August 1, 2008, a total solar eclipse was observed in Nizhnevartovsk .

The majority of the population in the city are Russians (65.59%), followed by the Tatars (9.66%) and the Ukrainians (8.34%). Smaller minorities are the Bashkirs (3.61%), Azerbaijanis (2.03%), Belarusians (1.43%) and Chuvashes (1.03%).

The city is the center of the West Siberian oil industry and one of the richest cities in Russia . It has a city theater.

In 2002 Nizhnevartovsk was connected to the Russian railway network. The single-track non-electrified line (operated by the Sverdlovsk Regional Directorate ) begins in Tyumen (km 0) and leads via Tobolsk (km 222) and Surgut (km 696) to Nizhnevartovsk (km 933).

The airport (ICAO code USNN / IATA code NJC ) of the city of Nizhnevartovsk is four kilometers northwest of the center. It has a 3200 meter long asphalt runway and also allows the use of wide-body aircraft . Numerous airlines offer flights to Moscow, numerous cities in Siberia and other destinations in Russia. It flies to Anapa , Yekaterinburg , Krasnodar , Novosibirsk , Omsk , Samara , Simferopol , Chelyabinsk and Ufa , with Baku and Kiev also serving international destinations.
