Listen to Alytus ? / i (German, 18th century: Alitten , Polish Olita ) is a municipality in south-eastern Lithuania with around 50,000 inhabitants. It is the center of the southeastern part of the country ( Dzūkija ) and lies a good 90 km southwest of the state capital Vilnius on the Memel . The city is around 50 km from the borders with Belarus ( EU external border ) and Poland . It is also the administrative center of the surrounding district of Alytus . Audio file / audio sample

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1377 in a chronicle of the Wigand von Marburg as a regional center in the literature. In 1581 Stephan Báthory gave the town its city charter according to Magdeburg law . During the Soviet era, several industrial plants were built, in 1969 the cotton combine ( Alytaus medvilnės Kombatas , later Alytaus tekstilė ) with 6,000 employees (in 1980) and around 1963 the refrigerator manufacturer Alytaus šaldytuvų gamykla (in 1972 the company employed 1,900 people). In 1989 there were 12 middle schools (general education schools with high school diplomas).

Alytus has been a municipality since 1995 (lit. Alytaus miesto savivaldybė ).

Alytus is a center of the manufacturing industry. One of the most successful Lithuanian manufacturing companies - the refrigerator manufacturer Snaigė ('snowflake') - is based in Alytus. The chemical industry and the largest sparkling wine and spirits manufacturer Alita can also be found here .

In Alytus there is a technical college (former polytechnic). The nearest airport is Kaunas Airport .

In Alytus there is an HVDC short coupling for coupling the Polish and Lithuanian power grids. The system supplied by ABB was completed in 2015 and has a transmission capacity of 500 MW at an operating voltage of ± 70 kV.

In the style of a park town, Alytus, located in a bend in the river Memel, does not offer any tourist attractions worth mentioning. The Dzūkija National Park and the Druskininkai health resort are worth mentioning in the vicinity .
