Cross-country skiing
The newly formed women's team, in which only Carola Anding was already there in Lake Placid, could not build on the successes of 1980 . Only an eighth place over 5 kilometers by Ute Noack made the otherwise gloomy balance of the cross-country skiers a little friendlier.
Uwe Bellmann was able to convince the men with the individual placements seven and ten, but for the relay it was only enough to place ninth.

Ski jumping
1984 was Jens Weißflog's year. By the turn of the year 1983/84 he had already won the Four Hills Tournament . Together with Matti Nykänen , he determined the competitions, won on the normal hill, while he let Nykänen go ahead on the large hill. In the shadow of Weißflog, Stefan Stannarius, who just missed the bronze medal on the normal hill, was particularly convincing.
