geography
Geographical location
Pokrov is located in the historical region of the so-called " Wild Field " on the left bank of the Basawluk ( Базавлук ), a 157 km long tributary of the Dnieper and in close proximity to the Kachowka reservoir . The distance to the Dnipro Oblast center is 110 km, the nearest large city is Nikopol 25 km east of the city.
City structure
The municipality also includes the 2 urban-type settlements Hirnyzke (Ukrainian Гірницьке ) and Tschortomlyk (Ukrainian Чортомлик ).
history
The eventful history of the region can be understood very well in the urban area: Not far from the city there is a Scythian kurgan (burial mound) from the 4th century BC that was excavated in 1971 . BC , in which, among other things, a golden pectoral was found. The medieval trade route from Scandinavia to Byzantium ran south of the city, in the Dnieper valley, which is now flooded by the Kachowka reservoir . In addition, parts of the city are on the area of a former Sitsch of the Zaporozhian Cossacks . A forerunner of the city was founded in 1883 as a mining settlement called Prichepylivka near a manganese mine. In 1956 several places in the area were united under the name Ordzhonikidze , and at the same time the newly created place was granted city rights. On March 17, 2016, as part of decommunization, the name was changed to the current name, which is derived from the Church Slavic short form of Pokrov Preswjatoi Bogorodizy , the holiday of Mary's Protection and Intercession , a high Orthodox religious holiday on October 1st.
