Rani Mukerji 2015

Rani Mukerji (formerly Mukherjee ; Hindi रानी मुखर्जी Rānī Mukharjī ; born March 21, 1978 in Mumbai ) is an Indian actress . She has become a celebrity in India through her Bollywood career. It won several awards including seven Filmfare Awards . Her roles in women-oriented films were instrumental in changing the concept of the Hindi film heroine.

Although Mukerji was born into a family that has been in the Indian film business for several generations, she initially did not consider becoming an actress. As a teenager, she appeared as a supporting actress in her father's film Biyer Phool (1996) and later accepted the lead role in the film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997) at her mother's request. She then began her career as a full-time actress and earned widespread recognition for her supporting role in the romantic film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - And Suddenly It's Love (1998). These initial successes were followed by three years in which Mukerji's films were not well received by the general public. It wasn't until she worked with Yash Raj Films in the drama Saathiya - Sehnsucht nach dir (2002) that Mukerji got the momentum in her career. In 2004 Mukerji established herself as a leading actress in Bollywood, with roles in the romantic comedies Hum Tum - Me & You, Crazy with Love and in the dramas Yuva and Veer and Zaara - The Legend of a Love . She earned further praise for her character as a deaf, blind and dumb woman in the drama Black (2005) and as an unhappily married woman in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - Until Happiness Do Us Part (2006). Mukerji then worked with Yash Raj Films on several unsuccessful films, which led to the criticism that she chooses bad roles and always appears as a couple with the same actors. The semi-biographical thriller No One Killed Jessica (2011) turned out to be her first box office hit in four years, followed by the hit thriller Talaash: The Answer Lies Within (2012) and the crime thriller Mardaani (2014).

In addition, Mukerji was involved in several humanitarian charities and raised awareness of the problems of women and children. She took part in concert tours and shows. In 2009 she was a member of the jury in the dance show Dance Premier League .

After marrying Aditya Chopra in 2014 , she is responsible for the creative design in his company Yash Raj Films .

Early years

Rani Mukerji was born on March 21, 1978 in Mumbai to a Bengali family who had long worked in the film industry. Her father, director and founder of Filmalaya Studios Ram Mukherjee , stopped making films before the birth of his daughter, so Rani Mukerji did not come into contact with the film industry when she was young. Her mother Krishna was a playback singer.

Mukerji's brother Raja Mukherjee works as a producer and director. Krishna Mukerji's sister is the National Award winner Debashree Roy. Kajol , a well-known actress in India, as well as Kajol's sister Tanishaa Mukerji , are her paternal second cousins. Her cousin Ayan Mukherjee also works as a director in the film industry.

Although there were many actors in her family, Mukerji initially did not consider a career as an actress. She said, "There were already too many actors at home. I wanted to be someone else."

After attending Maneckji Cooper High School in Juhu, she graduated from SNDT Women's University in Mumbai with a degree in home economics. Mukerji has been a trained Odissi dancer since tenth grade .

She has been in a relationship with the Indian Yash Raj Films director, screenwriter and producer Aditya Chopra since April 21, 2014 . They married in Cortona , a town in Italy , with close family and friends. Their daughter Adira was born on December 9, 2015. She changed her surname from Mukherjee to Mukerji for formal reasons and kept it for the time being after her marriage, as she is remembered as Rani Mukerji .

Career

Start of career (1997–1999)

Her first released film is Biyer Phool , a 1996 Bengali film that was produced by her family but received no attention. Previously, in 1994, a friend of the family, Salim Akhtar , offered her a role in his film Aa Gale Lag Jaa , but she turned it down at her father's request. He thought his daughter was too young for the film industry. Urmila Matondkar then got the role in Salim Akhtar's film. Mukerji got her first acting experience in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997). She plays the role of elementary school teacher Mala, who is raped when she does not return a man's love. Mala goes to court and demands that her rapist marry her because a raped girl in India no longer has a chance of marriage. At the request of her mother, she took part in this film. The film failed so badly that the actress was ready to forego another career. However, Shah Rukh Khan recommended Mukerji to Karan Johar for the role of Tina Malhotra in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - Suddenly It's Love (1998) after seeing her in the trailer for the film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat . But Karan didn't consider her for the time being because she didn't look western enough for a girl from England. He changed his mind when other actresses, including Aishwarya Rai and Twinkle Khanna , declined his offer. Mukerji became an overnight star and received her first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Aamir Khan recommended Mukerji Vikram Bhatt for a role in Ghulam (1998) after seeing her in her debut film. She was able to attract the attention of the audience. Her voice was dubbed because the director felt that Mukerji's voice would not fit her role as Alisha. The following year she had a dance appearance in the film Man to the song Kali Nagin Ke Jaise together with the leading actor Aamir Khan. In Sohail Khan's second production, Mukerji shared the screen with his older brother Salman Khan in 1999 in the comedy Hello Brother , in which Arbaaz Khan, Salman and Sohail's older brother, also starred.

Initial successes (2000-2003)

In 2000, Mukerji decided to stop playing the "typical Hindi film heroine" and signed contracts for action drama films like Badal and Bichhoo , which were new challenges for her, alongside Bobby Deol . Of the four other films in which Rani Mukerji took part in 2000, the bilingual film Hey Ram - Moments of Tenderness , which is partly a fictional representation of Mahatma Gandhi's murder, received the most attention. Mukerji played the character Aparna Ram, a Bengali school teacher who was raped and then murdered during the riot in Calcutta. She learned to speak Tamil for her role . On the side of Salman Khan and Preity Zinta Mukerji played in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega ... . In the successful film In Good and Bad Days , she was able to inspire the audience with a guest appearance.

Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Alaipayuthey was released in the Hindi version under the Yash Raj Films banner as Saathiya - Longing for You , with Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi in the leading roles. Rani won her first Critics' Award for Best Performance at the Filmfare Awards . In August 2002, Best Friends are not kissed! , another Yash Raj Films film in which she plays Pooja, the girl next door. Hrithik Roshan's character Rohan moves to England and uses emails to keep his friendship with Tina alive. Tina, played by Kareena Kapoor , doesn't want to bother with it, and so it happens that Rohan mistakenly thinks he's corresponding with Tina. Pooja, who has been secretly in love with him since childhood, does not reveal it to him.

International success (2004-2006)

The beginning of 2004 marked a successful period in Mukerji's career. Almost every project with Rani in the lead role has been a hit. For her role in Mani Ratnam's Yuva , she and Abhishek Bachchan have again received awards. In the successful film Veer and Zaara, directed by Yash Chopra, Mukerji played alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta a lawyer who defends the Pakistani prisoner Veer Prataph Singh and brings him together with his love. In the Yash Raj Films crook film Bunty Aur Babli , she went on a rampage with Abhishek Bachchan. As Babli, she was able to get the critics on her side, and all of these films became box office hits. In Kunal Kohli's romantic love film Hum Tum - I & you, crazy with love with Saif Ali Khan, she received the award for the best couple. To date, Mukerji is the only actress to have won both the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress - for her performances in Hum Tum - Me & you, crazy with love and Veer and Zaara - The Legend of a Love - in the same year. Her portrayals in Mangal Pandey and Beauty and the Spirit alongside the two great Indian actors Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are also noteworthy. For her role in the Helen Keller film adaptation of Black , she received great critical acclaim. Black holds the record with eleven Filmfare Awards in major categories; best movie, best director, best actress, and best actor.

Professional setback (2007-2010)

After the failure of Baabul , Mukerji signed for Siddharth Anand's family drama Papa goes on the gas - a family cannot be stopped . Saif Ali Khan in the role of a popular racing driver loses his livelihood and tries to support his wife, mother of two. Mukerji first played the role of a mother and modeled her character after her own mother. The film became a commercial success, but received mixed responses from critics because the characters were "shallow and boring," according to Rajeev Masand. In 2007 she then worked again with the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Saawariya , for which Bhansali had an artificial city built. Mukerji played the supporting role of the prostitute Gulabji, who tells the love story of the singer Ranbir Raj and the patient Sakina waiting for her beloved Imaan. The cousins Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor made their debut in this film. Salman Khan also appeared in a small role as Imaan. The film did not win through with the audience, but the critics recognized the talent of the two Kapoors. In 2009 Mukerji played with Shahid Kapoor in My Heart Calls for Love - Dil Bole Hadippa! , which was not well received by the audience, as before Papa Steps on the Gas - A Family Unstoppable (2007) and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008) alongside Saif Ali Khan in collaboration with Yash Raj Films .

No One Killed Jessica to Mardaani (2011-2014)

After two years, in January 2011, she starred alongside Vidya Balan in the thriller No One Killed Jessica , which is based on a true story, and received a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Mukerji played the reckless journalist Meera Gaity, who campaigns for justice in the Jessica Lall case. Film critic Aniruddha Guha described Mukerji's performance in No One Killed Jessica as one of her best. The film was Mukerji's first commercial success since Ta Ra Rum Pum and was particularly noticeable because of its success despite the absence of a prominent male actor. To promote the film, she played the role of Meera Gaity on the CID television series.

Rani Mukerji at an event for Aiyyaa 2012

Meenakshi and the Scent of Men (Aiyyaa) was released in October 2012, flopped at the box office, and Mukerji was not recognized by critics either. She played the dreamy Meenakshi Deshpande, who falls in love with a young art student who doesn't seem to be aware of her existence. The South Indian actor Prithviraj made his Hindi film debut with this film. Mukerji justified the film by saying that she wanted to try something new and knew that she would take a risk. In the mystery thriller Talaash: The Answer Lies Within (2012) she was able to prove herselfas a grieving motheralongside Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor , and won awards for Best Supporting Actress. In 2013 she appeared in the four-part short film Bombay Talkies , directed by Karan Johar , with whom she last worked in 2006 in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - Until Happiness We Part . The short story is about the journalist Gayatri, who gets a new employee who is gay. Randeep Hooda plays her husband at Mukerji's side, who discovers through the new employee that he too is homosexual and that his marriage to Gayatri is therefore not working. For the 100th anniversary of Hindi cinema, the four-part film was shown in Cannes in 2013. Mukerji said she wanted to make a film similar to Dabangg , and in 2014, under the Yash Raj Films banner, sherealized her desire to play a role as a policewoman. She was able to convince the audience in Mardaani in this role, where she worked again with Pradeep Sarkar after the flop of Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - The Way of a Woman (2007). Mardaani achieved hit status in less than three weeks and earned Mukerji a lot of recognition from police officers and politicians. Eventually the film was shown tax-free in Indian cinemas. The Polish cameraman who worked in Mardaani made it possible to broadcast the film in Poland . Thus Mardaani the first Indian film in Poland was a first. That Mardaani draws attention to the children trafficking, Mukerji received the National Award. Because of her pregnancy, Rani Mukerji then took a career break.

Image and artistic career

Mukerji is one of the most famous and notable celebrities in India; at the height of her career, she was often referred to as one of the most popular and attractive Indian celebrities and was one of the highest paid actresses in Bollywood. Filmfare counted them for two years (2005-2006) in a row among the "ten most powerful names in Bollywood".

“A month before I start shooting, I sit with my director and try to understand how he imagines the character on screen and I take notes. Then I start with the most basic - working on looks. It is very important that the physical appearance of the character is correct because all of this makes it more believable. Once that is achieved, I will explore the finer nuances of who the girl is like, her background. "

Since 2007, Mukerji's popularity has been falling, and she has lost her advertising partners to younger actresses. In 2013, the American Embassy in India honored her with a special trophy for her contributions to Indian cinema.
