Söllmnitz (with Wernsdorf and Lauenhain ) together with Cretzschwitz form the 966 hectare district of Cretzschwitz / Söllmnitz of the city of Gera in Thuringia with a total of 695 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).

geography

Söllmnitz is located in the northeast of the city of Gera on the border with the district of Greiz .

history

The oldest documented mention of Selmnitz dates back to 1121, in later documents the spellings Selmnitz, Selmse or Selmenitz appear. The name is interpreted as Im or behind the quarry and indicates an original sorbent settlement.

Söllmnitz is the ancestral seat of a knightly family from Meißnischen, which was later documented under the name Lords of Selmnitz . A widow of this family was in correspondence with Martin Luther and in 1523 received the communion of the Lutheran faith from Thomas Müntzer in the convent of St. Georg in Halle (Saale) . The family died out in 1858. The manor was demolished in 2008 after a long period of vacancy and decay.

One of the main livelihoods in earlier years was the cultivation of vines and hops , of which only a few field names are evidence today. A distillery and a brewery had also been located in the village since the beginning of the 16th century and had a very good reputation.

In 1827 there were two manors, 33 houses and 164 residents in the village. The school had been in Wernsdorf since 1839 ; until then the schooling took place in Hirschfeld (district of Greiz).

At the beginning of the 19th century, clay mining began in the village; It was processed in the former Reußen mine in Cretzschwitz .

After the Gera-Meuselwitz-Wuitzer Railway (GMWE) was founded, Söllmnitz received a train station in 1901. He had u. a. the function of a separation station for the line branching off here to the then Reußengrube roof tile factory in Cretzschwitz. The planned closure of the line for 1970 was preceded by the devastating flood of May 3, 1969: It devastated the track systems in the Gera- Pforten terminus and on some sections to Gera-Leumnitz. Thereupon the Deutsche Reichsbahn stopped the passenger traffic, the freight traffic it kept upright in the section Kayna-Wuitz-Mumsdorf until the end of December 1969. On the other hand, the last (non-public) train passed through Söllmnitz in mid-May 1969, and the Reichsbahn used it to fetch wagons that had stopped in Gera to Wuitz-Mumsdorf. A steam locomotive and two passenger cars, erected in 1977 as a memorial for GMWE in Söllmnitz, came from Saxony, where they returned in August 2002.

In 1992 the groundbreaking ceremony for the Am Weinberg residential area took place . 42 single-family and semi-detached houses were built here on a slight southern slope.

On April 1, 1994, the municipality of Söllmnitz was incorporated into the city of Gera. Since a citizens' meeting on April 22, 1994, it has formed the Cretzschwitz / Söllmnitz district of the city of Gera together with the neighboring Cretzschwitz and the villages of Wernsdorf and Lauenhain, which were previously incorporated into Söllmnitz .

Söllmnitz Manor

The manor Söllmnitz was a manor suitable for state assembly . The patrimonial jurisdiction in the form of inheritance jurisdiction over Söllmnitz and parts of Lauenhain , Hirschfeld , Wernsdorf and Cretzschwitz was connected with the possession of the manor . The lower jurisdiction was abolished on January 1, 1855.

The manor Söllmnitz was divided from 1603 to 1788 (Vorder- and Hintersöllmnitz). The owners of the front manor were the Winkler families, von Berbisdorf since 1658 , von Koppy since 1770 , von Weißenbach since 1731 , and Count Heinrich XXX since 1770 . (Reuss-Gera) and since 1787 von Weydenbach . The owners of the rear property (which was split into up to 9 parts) changed often.

The owners of the combined estate from 1788 were von Weydenbach, from 1799 from Bibra , from 1819 Semmel, from 1826 the Counts of Beust and from 1833 the Hagenbruch family (in 1848 this was the member of the state parliament Eduard Hagenbruch ).

politics

Since 1994 there has been a local council (formerly local council) for the communities of Cretzschwitz and Söllmnitz (with Wernsdorf and Lauenhain). The district mayor has been Peter Zingel (independent) since June 2014.

The place can be reached via Bundesstraße 2 . The public transport connection is every two hours during the day via RVG Regionalverkehr Gera / Land GmbH, line 229.
