Rouhling (German Ruhlingen ) is a French commune with 2060 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Sarreguemines arrondissement .

geography

Rouhling is located above the Saar valley not far from the border with Germany near Grosbliederstroff at an altitude between 241 and 350 m above sea level, the mean height is 344 m. The municipality covers 6.02 km².

history

Rouhling is named after a Frankish landowner named Ruldo and was first mentioned in 1249 as Raldinga . Between 1670 and 1697 it was already occupied by the French. Since September 22, 1798 the place belonged to France. From 1871 to 1945 Rouhling shared the fate of the Alsatian-Lorraine communities and was temporarily part of the German Empire , was again French between 1919 and 1940 and annexed by Germany from 1940 to 1944 during World War II . With the conquest of the surrounding area by American troops, it has been part of the French Republic again since December 1944 .
