history
After the Shoku Nihongi , the Suwa province was split off on July 24, 721 ( traditionally : Yōrō 5/6/26) , but was reintegrated on April 17, 731 ( Tempyō 3/3/7).
The old capital ( kokufu ) was the modern Matsumoto . Due to its size, Shinano was often divided into several fiefs during the Sengoku period , and other castle towns such as Komoro , Ina and Ueda developed as a result . Shinano was one of the Takeda Shingen's centers of power during its wars against Uesugi Kenshin and others.
In 1871, after the Meiji Restoration , the province was divided into Nagano Prefecture and Chikuma Prefecture . In 1876 they were reunited to form today's Nagano Prefecture.
During the Second World War , the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano was named after this province.
