Leo Skrbenský from Hříště
Leo Skrbenský von Hříště , Czech Lev Skrbenský z Hříště (born June 12, 1863 in Hausdorf , Moravia ; † December 24, 1938 in Dlouhá Loučka , Olomouc district ) was a Czech Roman Catholic Archbishop of Prague and later Archbishop of Olomouc .
Life
Leo Skrbenský von Hříště attended the archiepiscopal grammar school in Kremsier , studied law at the University of Innsbruck from 1882 to 1884 and from 1885 theology at the Olomouc seminary , where he was ordained priest in 1889 . He graduated from the Papal Gregorian University in 1892 with the degree of Dr. iur. can. from.
In addition to studying in Rome, he worked as a chaplain at the Anima College . After returning to his homeland, he initially worked as a pastor in Moravia. In 1896 he became canon and in 1898 provost of Kremsier and canon in Olomouc.
In 1899, Emperor Franz Joseph I appointed him successor to the late Archbishop of Prague Schönborn . He received his episcopal ordination on January 6, 1900, from Theodor Kohn , Archbishop of Olomouc; Co- consecrators were Martin Josef Říha , Bishop of Budweis , and Ferdinand Johann Nepomuk Kalous , Auxiliary Bishop in Prague. A year later, on April 15, 1901, he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. elevated to cardinal and was assigned the titular church of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio . His episcopal work, however, was overshadowed by the simmering nationality conflict, especially since he had the reputation of an Austrian-minded aristocrat who was promoted by the Viennese imperial court.
In 1904 the Czech Catholic clergy founded a reform Catholic national association, which was promoted by the bishops and which, among other things, a. turned against the Austrian influence in church matters. Nevertheless, Leo Skrbenský von Hříště did not manage to remove the existing tensions.
At the request of the Viennese government, he was elected by the Olomouc Cathedral Chapter to succeed the late Archbishop and Cardinal Francis von Sales Bauer in 1916 and, with the consent of the Pope, transferred to Olomouc in the same year. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, as an Austrian-minded bishop, he found little approval in Olomouc. That is probably why he resigned his position in 1920. After his death in 1938 at Dlouhá Loučka Castle, he was buried in Wenceslas Cathedral , the Olomouc Cathedral. He was the last remaining cardinal, who was led by Pope Leo XIII. was created.
