Official memorial service

Dignitaries at Nelson Mandela's funeral:
  • South Africa
  • Heads of State and Government
  • Government officials
  • The official memorial service took place on December 10, 2013 in the FNB Stadium and began at 11:00 a.m. local time (UTC + 2). 91 heads of state and government and 10 former presidents were expected to attend the service.

When they met near the podium, just before they each made their speeches in honor of Mandela, the American President Barack Obama and Cuba's President Raúl Castro shook hands. This greeting attracted worldwide attention as a historic handshake between the representatives of the long-standing hostile states .

During the event there were repeatedly audible, thousand-fold boos from the audience when the South African President Jacob Zuma could be seen on the stadium's large monitors. The unexpected demonstrations of displeasure against the ANC chairman, who was most recently criticized for a corruption affair, were particularly controversial in South Africa.

After the event, it became known that Thamsanqa Jantjie , who was appointed by the South African government as a sign language interpreter and who stood on the stage right next to the speakers for the entire duration of the state act, was a long-time schizophrenic patient who was ignorant of sign language , who was already charged with murder and other serious crimes. The facts that he was used after public appearances despite previous protests and that, despite his illness and court records, he was left in close proximity to some of the world's highest security politicians have been the subject of controversy around the world.
