Ulrichskirchen-Schleinbach is a market town with 2621 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria .
geography
Ulrichskirchen-Schleinbach is located in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria. The area of the market town covers 26.5 square kilometers. 26.56 percent of the area is forested.
Until the beginning of the 19th century the Rußbach meandered near Ulrichskirchen and there were extensive wetlands. In order to be able to intensify agricultural cultivation, the Rußbach was later straightened and wet areas drained. The measures resulted in serious ecological deficits, and many water-bound animal and plant species lost their habitat. Furthermore, the measures meant that precipitation flowed off more quickly and greater flood damage occurred further downstream. As a corrective measure, two retention areas were made between 2003 and 2004 , at Schleinbach with 143,000 cubic meters and southeast of Ulrichskirchen with 54,000 cubic meters, and a river widening east of Ulrichskirchen. This allows flood waves to be caught and cushioned. The Schleinbach retention area alone dampens the peak of a hundred-year flood by around a quarter. An existing quarry forest was included in the Schleinbach retention area and several still waters and a stream were created. As a result, the habitat was u. a. restored for waterfowl. As migratory birds, the curlew , the bag-titan , the wagtail , the teal and the water ranger could now be observed, as breeding birds the little grebe and lapwing .
In the Kreuttal, through which the Russbach, which is not regulated here, there is the only occurrence of the Speta squill in Austria .

history
During the construction of the Westschiene gas pipeline , settlement sites from the early Neolithic (5th millennium BC), the early Bronze Age (1800–1600 BC) and the Germanic era (2nd / 3rd century AD) were exposed. The discovery of a storage pit in which there were three skeletons comes from the so-called Aunjetitz culture .
In the last days of the Second World War , between April 14 and 16, 1945, Schleinbach was the scene of fierce and varied fighting between troops of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army , in which 40 German and 15 Soviet soldiers were killed. Heavy damage to buildings was caused by air strikes and artillery fire . The German troops withdrawing to the west blew up seven bridges, including three railway bridges. Ulrichskirchen was attacked from the air on April 12th and 19th, killing civilians and burning seven buildings.
