The Waipa District is one for Region Waikato counting management unit in New Zealand . The district council, called the Waipa District Council , is based in Te Awamutu City , as is the district administration.

Geographical location

The district is the second smallest district in the Waikato region with 1470 km² of pure land . With 46,668 inhabitants counted in 2013, the district has a population density of 31.7 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the highest population density in the Waikato region .

To the north and west, the district is enclosed by the Waikato District . The Otorohanga District connects to the south . In the northeast, the Matamata-Piako District forms the border, followed by the South Waikato District in the east. While the Waipa River crosses the same in the west of the district from south to north, the Waitoa River flows past the eastern district boundary with a loop towards Cambridge , the largest city in the district with just over 15,000 inhabitants. The second largest city is Te Awamutu .

The summers are warm and sometimes humid, while the winters are mild. The preferred wind direction is west to southwest, the precipitation is between 1100 and 1500 mm per year and the sunshine duration is 1900 hours per year.

Population development

In 2013, 6,123 of the 46,668 inhabitants of the district were of Māori origin (13.1%). This means that 1.0% of the country's Māori population lived in the South Waikato District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 32,000  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 88.7% said they were European, 13.8% said they had Māori roots, 1.2% came from the islands of the Pacific and 2.7% came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 17.5% of the population said they were born overseas and 2.9% of the population spoke Māori , 18.0% among the Māori .

The Waipa District is in turn divided into five wards , the Cambridge Ward with four Councilors (council members), the Te Awamutu Ward with four, the Pirongia Ward with two and the two Maungatoutori Ward and Kakepuku Ward with one each. Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the twelve council members are re-elected every three years.

The predominant industries are dairy farming, sheep farming and fruit growing.

The district is connected to traffic by the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which runs through Cambridge and crosses the district to the northeast. The State Highway 3 runs from Hamilton coming in north-south direction the district and a little further west is doing the 39 State Highway also. The North Island Main Trunk Railway runs parallel between the two Highways 3 and 39 and connects the district capital directly.
