The R-series is a motorcycle model series from the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha Motor .

This model series was initiated by the introduction of the Yamaha YZF-R1 with 1000 cc displacement in 1998. The 600 and 750 models ( Yamaha YZF-R6 and Yamaha YZF-R7 ) followed a year later . The latter, however, was a replica of the factory superbike from Yamaha Racing, limited to just 500 pieces . It was taken out of the range in 2002 after the rule was changed to a maximum displacement of 1000 cm³ in the Superbike class. The R1 and R6 are Yamaha's spearheads in the hotly contested and prestigious Supersport / Superbike segment. Motorcycles directly competing with the Yamaha R-series are the Honda Fireblade (CBR), Suzuki GSX-R and Kawasaki ZX-R series .

A version with 321 cm³, the YZF-R3, will be available from May 2015 .

Light motorcycle

In order to offer young people a vehicle from the successful R series, the YZF-R125 , a 125 cc version, appeared in the spring that , apart from the name, has hardly any technical similarities. The YZF-R125 was able to establish itself well in the German market. In September 2014 it took second place in the new registrations of light motorcycles with 1746 pieces.
