The following is a discography of Metallica, a San Francisco-based thrash metal band. Metallica has released eight studio albums, two EPs, two live albums, one cover album, nine DVDs, forty singles, twenty-one music videos, and one film. This list does not include material performed by members or former members of Metallica that was recorded with Spastik Children, Megadeth, Echobrain, Exodus, Flotsam and Jetsam, Voivod, Leather Charm, Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves.
Metallica was formed in 1981 by Lars Ulrich (drums) and James Hetfield (vocals, guitars). After several guitarist and bassist changes, the band settled on Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton, respectively. Metallica started playing locally, releasing its first well known demo, No Life 'til Leather, in 1982. The demo caught the attention of Johny Zazula, who signed Metallica to Megaforce Records.[1] The band released Kill 'em All in 1983, and the following year they released Ride the Lightning. After the album came out, Metallica left Megaforce and signed to Elektra Records.[2] In March 1986, the band released its third studio album, Master of Puppets, which was Metallica's first Gold certified album by the RIAA.[3] While promoting the album, Burton was killed in a bus accident. Jason Newsted was hired as a replacement and the bands first release to feature the new member was an EP of cover songs. ...And Justice for All was released in August 1988 and debuted at number six on the Billboard 200.[4]
Metallica's fifth, self-titled album was released in 1991 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.[4] The band embarked on a two year tour in support of the album. Metallica has since been certified 14 Platinum by the RIAA.[3] Metallica recorded enough material for a double album, but released it all as two separate albums, titled Load and ReLoad.[5] After the release of a cover album and a live album, Newsted departed from the band. Metallica recorded St. Anger without an official bassist. Robert Trujillo became Metallica's newest bassist in 2003. The band has recently finished working on its ninth studio album, Death Magnetic, with Rick Rubin producing. The album is set to be distributed through Warner Bros. Records. Metallica has sold over 90 million records worldwide,[6] with over 57 million records in the United States alone.[7][8] This makes the band the most successful thrash metal band of all time.[7]
