Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it immediately before the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 2,000 characters (around 2 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles longer than 2,000 characters may still be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
  • Articles on living individuals – these must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    • short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    • neutral,
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    • preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
    • formatted as [[Image:image name |right|100x100px| Description]] and placed directly above the suggested fact.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 2,000+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article by [[User]]; Nom by ~~~~
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article self-nom by ~~~~

  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|May 20}} Thanks, ~~~~

This should be reformulated "Carne Muerte" doesn't mean anything in comanche only in Spanish. It is possible that he also had a name in Comanche that meant the same, but thats not how its understood with the current formulation.·Maunus· ·ƛ· 16:47, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, much of the Comanche language consisted of Spanish words, since so many Mexicans had been adopted or forced into the tribe. From the sources I have, "Carne Muerte" was his name in Comanche and Spanish, and again, many of the words were the same. JohninMaryland (talk) 22:50, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since you don't have an actual quote to confirm that, I agree with Maunus, you should alter the hook to just "in Spanish". Gatoclass (talk) 02:09, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have a point there. Agreed. But, my intention of putting the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and not FTSE 100 and Hang Seng indices (each having a good DYK suggestion) was because the BSE and the Indian stock market related pages are under-developed. I was hoping to see if a DYK would prompt someone to take it up. This is more so because of the developing Indian economy and the relevant and increasing interest in the subject. The case is all yours. Mspraveen (talk) 17:41, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reference verified as well. No in-line cites but a single reference specifying the exact section helps verification. AgneCheese/Wine 08:18, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, this one is totally out in my book. Has only one reference, which is to a talk forum which doesn't qualify as a reliable source. Also, exceptional claims require exceptional evidence, so an article like this will require more than the usual sourcing, not less. Gatoclass (talk) 17:24, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Update: the article now has a (single) scholarly source, however, it still has no inline cites and has a POV tone in places which I'm uncomfortable with. I think it needs more references and more work, but on the other hand it probably serves as a useful expose of Nazi plans for Eastern Europe (which still aren't all that well known) so in spite of my misgivings I might waive my opposition. Gatoclass (talk) 05:22, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have rewritten the article with the scholarly work (Tooze's book). It is based on two subchapters in his article; I don't think I used any wording much different from his in terms of neutrality. Since the book is easily available from most Western libraries, if anybody wants to add inline citations and verify the content, I figure out it's an easy thing to do. In terms of the hook, I find the most interesting part of the article that it was extermination due to simple starvation, and this one was planned not only for racial purity reasons but due to much economical planning. In other words, Nazi's extermination was not pure craziness - it had a terrible logic behind it. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 06:04, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
While you're at it, you might check out how the British sea blockade of World War I, which was extended into 1919 until the Versailles Treaty was signed, killed 750,000 Germans or so, mainly children, with millions suffering from the effects of malnutrition. In 1914, the large population of Germany had depended on imports, and the Empire was not prepared at all for a prolonged war. "In other words, the British blockade was not pure craziness - it had a terrible logic behind it." Germans were lucky that Germany's many Nobel laureates managed to produce both fertilizer and gun powder. Else, it would have been much more serious. Hitler and others learned their lesson from the British and their allies. And after WW2, Germans had to starve again under occupation. -- Matthead  Discuß   07:37, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Length is only 1816 bytes, below the recently changed criteria of 2000 characters. Referencing is also not very clear. Besides no in-line citations, the two external links at the bottom are to sites like IMDB that are not really reliable sources. AgneCheese/Wine 07:34, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Length verified. Referencing is not as clear. I tagged the part in the article about the study of the rocks to help support the hook. I would recommend rewriting the hook to focus on that aspect and remove the slightly POV "famous fall" description. It would also help the hook to be one question rather than a question and a statement. AgneCheese/Wine 08:40, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With the change to 2000 characters, I am not sure if the deadline has changed as well. Thus, I am not adding this to the 1/18 section.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 16:35, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm inclined to agree the "Expired" header has been moved up too quickly, so I'll shift it back down. Unfortunately, I still won't be able to promote your article until you provide an inline cite for the hook. Gatoclass (talk) 16:57, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How is it now?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 19:11, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Those links only prove they attempted to build the towers at one stage, not that they've been trying to do so for the last 25 years, which is what your hook says. The article itself basically looks okay to me, so I suggest you just come up with an alternative hook that is fully verifiable and then it should be acceptable for promotion. Gatoclass (talk) 19:23, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The links document a 1986 attempt to expand the building, a 1989 attempt and a current attempt. The firm also renovated the station and the current plan has been in the works since 2002.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 21:17, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer to see "over twenty years" instead of "nearly twenty-five years" since it is 21 or 22 years (2008-1986=22). This current update already has too many U.S. article otherwise I would have used it. Royalbroil 04:56, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A building like that (i.e., one that was suppose to be built in 1986) was probably proposed by 1985 if not earlier.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 05:58, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

`Length verified. Referencing is not so clear with no in-line cites. I tagged a section that would help support the DYK hook with a ref. AgneCheese/Wine 03:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
An anon editor strangely deleted my comment above. I suppose that it was because another editor had improve the article since I reviewed it and dealt with my concern. I appreciate those efforts and, to the anon, I would recommend adding a note here that the concerns have been addressed rather than just blanking another editor's comments. We are all doing our best to improve the project in our own ways. AgneCheese/Wine 11:36, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Even though it didn't require inline citations for DYK, it now has them (and has for a while). This comment has been out-of-date for a long while now, yet the author failed to check it, and it has obviously stopped this article being published on the front page — that's the fault of the visual concept, not the article. Given it is apparently taboo to remove outdated and incorrect comments which are preventing this perfectly good article going on the mainpage, I have compromised and removed the pesky little "?" icon which was probably causing the otherwise-unexplained delay, and replaced it with my very own "tick" at the start. Yay for me. Daniel (talk) 11:39, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I will respectfully note that like you, I am a volunteer investing my time in this aspect of the project. While I very frequently follow up on this page, I can not follow up on each and every article submitted to DYK. I place good faith and trust in the nominators to reply back on this page (or even my talk page if you so like) that they have addressed the concerns or if they have a question about my review. As anyone can observe on this page, I will amend my comments and note that an article has been improved. You just have to let us know. AgneCheese/Wine 11:45, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you're going to use the icons, which effectively act as a veto (as evidenced by the fact the concerns have been addressed in this article for days now, yet it still hasn't been chosen despite every other "approved" article from this section being used), then it is your responsibility to ensure that they stay up to date. Otherwise, I am left with no option but to remove your comment, as the icon won't go away otherwise. Of course, if you don't use the icon, or you ensure your comments are updated, then the problem won't exist. But if one updated-to-address-concern article misses out because of an out-of-date icon tag which flashes red lights in the /N-admins' eyes, then it has been a bad concept, and that almost happened here. Replying is pointless unless I'm allowed to use a 100px green tick, because the fact that there's a "?" means administrators skip it, as evidenced here. Daniel (talk) 11:49, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Daniel, you are left with several option that differ from blanking another editor's good faith comments. The simplest option would have been to just say "Hey the article has been improved. Take another look". Even as an anon, the physical effort to do that wouldn't have been much different than what you did do in blanking my comments. And honestly, it would have been alot of more civil with less stress for the both of us. AgneCheese/Wine 12:05, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am very much on Agne's side here. I know just how much hard work is involved in reviewing these articles for DYK, it's very time consuming and it's done from goodwill and a sense of responsibility to the project. I certainly don't have time in addition to the reviewing to be dropping comments at user talk pages or constantly rechecking pages to see whether my concerns have been addressed or not. If a nominator wants to ensure his article gets promoted, it's up to him to check this page regularly to see if any concerns have been raised, and if so to fix the article or hook himself.
In any case, Daniel is wrong to say that pages with queries don't get promoted. I have promoted a number of them, and will continue to do so, if I think the query is not enough to worry about, or if it's easily fixed in some other way. A case in point is an article I promoted to the next batch which was queried because it called the individual in question a "leader" of the counterculture movement. I just changed it to "proponent" and promoted the article anyway, because it was only a quibble about the phrasing of the hook. Gatoclass (talk) 12:20, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note that even your news source still uses "allegedly", as he apparently has not been convicted. Also, "Investigation disclosed" is an odd way to say this - usually you disclose something secret, whereas an investigation finds something. The larger problem is that the guidelines discourage negative hooks about living persons. Wnt (talk) 19:30, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Length verified. Referencing is not so clear. Outside of the video, the only referencing is a fansite which doesn't seem to pass WP:RS. The summary in the hook seems pretty straightforward and non controversial. Is there any more reliable sources out there that you could use for the article? AgneCheese/Wine 03:24, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Length verified. Referencing is not as clear. I tagged two items in the article that would help support the hook angle of "Blue General" and influence on scouting. AgneCheese/Wine 01:59, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I contacted the author; she has simply translated the Polish wikipedia article, which has a list of references but not inline citations. I'd suggest dropping the Blue General (I have troubles verifying this was a widespread nickname), but his influence on scouting seems legit.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 06:07, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, searching off-wiki, the influence in scouting looks verifiable. I amended the hook to your suggestion and it looks good. AgneCheese/Wine 10:04, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Articles created/expanded on January 17

The prose characters (not counting the table & list) is currently 1,341 bytes, below the criteria of 2000 bytes. The hook is referenced in various places. AgneCheese/Wine 05:07, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Every high school (and indeed every organisation with a building) is located somewhere and was founded in some year. You may be able to find a more interesting hook and also expand the article beyond 2000 characters by referring to intellectually independent secondary sources (e.g. not the district website), if they exist. cab (talk) 05:11, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ditto, the hook doesn't express anything off-centre. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:19, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reference verified. Though the article is essentially a compilation of info tables with only 758 of prose article text. I know that infoboxes are not meant to count towards the DYK character count, it is not as clear about the precedent of info-tables. The hook itself is not even in prose from but rather taken as interpretation from the table. AgneCheese/Wine 22:57, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think infotables count, otherwise we couldn't include lists in DYK. Gatoclass (talk) 14:58, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think they do. Only prose counts. I don't include parts of lists. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:19, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Length verified. The source about "first since Reconstruction" is not so clear. There is no in-line cite attached to the claim in the article but the reference to the "Sigma Nu fraternity" site (currently #7) makes a reference that he "might" be the first but overall that doesn't seem like a very reliable source. • ...that Wentworth Castle in South Yorkshire was motivated in part by resentment and envy, but two great construction campaigns by two earls in remarkably different styles, each time under unusual circumstances, achieved handsome results? (expanded 15x Wetman (talk) 19:59, 18 January 2008 (UTC))[reply]
Expansion length verified. Referencing is not as clear. The hook is taken from the lead, which doesn't necessarily need a cite if it is in the body but I'm having seeing it. I suspect it is probably in the offline sources and I would appreciate any clarification. I can see the sources that verify that two earls conducted two campaigns in different styles. That's no problem. The items that I can't find reference for is the description (somewhat POV) that the end results were "handsome" and that the construction campaigns were motivated by "resentment" and "envy"?
