The 1981/82 season of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey was the ninth season of the second highest German ice hockey division. The champions EHC Essen could not qualify for the top division in the relegation round to the Bundesliga after the second-placed Duisburger SC , who had been determined to be promoted in the relegation round, waived their starting place, the fourth ECD Iserlohn moved up.

In addition to EC Hannover and EHC 70 Munich , both of which withdrew their teams from play during the current season, EA Kempten / Kottern , EV Landsberg and Augsburger EV moved into the Oberliga Süd and Deggendorfer SC into the fifth-class regional league Bavaria back.

The TSV Straubing team took part in the game this season under the name EHC Straubing , while EHC Krefeld 78 now started as Krefelder EV .

In contrast to the previous season , the league was played on two tracks, in the form of a north and a south group . The north group started with seven, while eight teams took part in the south group . First, a preliminary round was played in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams in its group. Then the best five teams from both groups took part in the final round, while the remaining teams had to play in the respective relegation round in the north and in the south to stay up.

The final round was played as a single round, then the four best-placed teams took part in the relegation round to the Bundesliga . Due to the cessation of game operations at EHC 70 Munich after the end of the final round, the fifth, Deggendorfer SC , took part in this round. The winner of the relegation round in the north and the first three teams from the south played the winner of the Asmussen Cup .
