Ames is the largest city (with the status " City ") in Story County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . The first evidence of human settlement in the area around the present city dates back to the Middle Woodland period . The first white settlers came to Story County in the 1840s.

In 1859, land was secured for the construction of an agricultural school that later became the Iowa Agricultural College, which later became Iowa State University .

In 1864 a railway line of the then began construction Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad at the bridge over the South Skunk River established a settlement that after Congressman Oakes Ames of Massachusetts was named.
