Andy Schmid (born August 30, 1983 in Horgen , Canton of Zurich ; actually Andre Schmid) is a Swiss handball player .

Career

Schmid went through all youth teams of BSV Borba Luzern . From 2002 to 2004 he played in the National League B for the newly founded game community SG Stans / Lucerne . In 2004 he made his debut with Grasshopper Club Zurich in the National League A and stayed until 2007. He then played for ZMC Amicitia Zurich , with whom he won the championship twice. In the 2009/10 season Schmid played mostly on the back center for the Danish club Bjerringbro-Silkeborg . On March 29, 2010, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen announced Schmid's commitment for the 2010/11 season. Schmid received a four-year contract, which was extended in September 2013 for a further two years and in 2014 prematurely until 2018. In 2016, the contract was extended early until June 30, 2020. In 2018, the contract was again extended prematurely by 2 years until 2022.

Schmid has played 182 international matches for Switzerland so far, scoring 875 goals. He made his debut on December 19, 2003 in the international match against Luxembourg. Schmid wears the shirt number 2 in the national team and in the club.

Play style

Schmid is considered one of the best playmakers of his time. In particular, his frequent acrobatic allusions to the circle and his predictive game overview are his strengths.

In addition, Schmid has a precise shot from a distance. Under coach Nikolaj Jacobsen he was used almost exclusively in attack. If he was used in defense, he only defended on the wing position. From there he initiates the switching game.

In the national team he is regularly the first seven-meter shooter. He usually throws seamlessly and without faking the throw in advance.
