Antonio García (born June 5, 1980 in Madrid ) is a Spanish racing car driver . He won the Open Telefónica by Nissan in 2000 . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he achieved three class wins (2008, 2009 and 2011). In 2013, he won the ALMS GT rating . In 2014 he competed in the United SportsCar Championship (USCC).

Career

García began his motorsport career in karting in 1994 , where he was active until 1998. Among other things, he won the Formula A European Championship in 1997. Back in 1997, he also made his debut in single-seater racing and was third in the French Formula Renault Campus. In 1998 he got a cockpit with Adrian Campos Motorsport in the Open Fortuna by Nissan . He won two races and finished fifth in the drivers' standings, while teammate Marc Gené won the title. In 1999 García kept his Campos cockpit in the series, which was now called Euro Open MoviStar by Nissan . With a win, he finished the season in sixth place overall. With Fernando Alonso , his teammate won the title again. 2000 García denied his third season for Campos. The series traded under the name Open Telefónica by Nissan that year . García won four races and won the championship. With 199 to 182 points he prevailed against Giuseppe Burlotti .

In 2001 García began the season for the Red Bull Junior Team F3000 , which was supervised by RSM Marko , in the international Formula 3000 championship . After the fourth race he was replaced by Ricardo Maurício . At the end of the season he returned to Formula 3000 for Durango Formula and replaced Jaime Melo for the last three races. García ended the season with no points in 26th place overall. Two tenth places were his best results. In 2001 García also drove three races in the FIA GT Championship for RWS Motorsport , in which he won the NGT classification once. 2002 García returned to Campos in the now Telefónica World Series hot championship. With a second place as the best result, he finished fifth overall. In addition, he completed Formula 1 test drives for Minardi . In 2003 García switched to touring car racing to Ravaglia Motorsport in the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC). Three second places were his best results and he finished eighth in the championship. With 46 to 43 points he prevailed internally against Fabrizio Giovanardi . He also completed two races in the Superfund World Series for Campos . In 2004 García stayed with Ravaglia Motorsport in the ETCC. With a second place he finished seventh in the drivers' championship. He prevailed against his team mate Alessandro Zanardi with 43 to 8 points. In 2005 , the touring car series received the status of a world championship and has since been known as WTCC . García competed again for Ravaglia Motorsport. Two second places were his best results and he finished the season in ninth place. Again he won - with 51 to 36 points - the team-internal duel against Zanardi. In addition, in 2005 García drove for Russian Age Racing a race in the FIA ​​GT Championship in which he won the GT1 class.

In 2006 García switched to endurance racing. He drove in the Le Mans Series for Cirtek Motorsport and the Modena team . He achieved a victory in the LMGT1 class, which he finished in fifth place. In 2006 García also made his debut for Russian Age Racing at the Le Mans 24 Hours . In 2007 García was active in both European and American endurance sports. In Europe he drove for Team Modena and was sixth overall in the LMGT1 classification of the Le Mans Series. He also took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race for Team Modena . In North America he drove three races in the prototype class DP of the Rolex Sports Car Series for Cheever Racing and one race in the GT1 class of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) for Team Modena .

In 2008 García was together with Tomáš Enge for the Modena team with three class wins overall runner-up in the LMGT1 class of the Le Mans Series. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he won the GT1 class for Aston Martin Racing together with David Brabham and Darren Turner . In North America he drove an ALMS race in the GT1 class for Bell Motorsport and 13 races in the DP class Rolex Sports Car Series for Cheever Racing. He was on the podium once. In 2009 García reached third place in the LMGT1 classification of the Le Mans Series for Team Modena together with Leo Mansell . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he started for Corvette Racing together with Jan Magnussen and Johnny O'Connell . García managed to defend victory in the GT1 class. For CRS Racing he was also active in a race in the FIA ​​GT series. García also took part in an ALMS race for Corvette Racing, in which he won the GT1 classification. In 2010 García ended his involvement in the Le Mans Series. His main focus was on the Rolex Sports Car Series. Starting for Spirit of Daytona Racing , he finished the season with a podium finish in 16th place in the DP standings. He also contested two ALMS races and the Le Mans 24-hour race for Corvette Racing in the GT2 category . In 2011 García completed the same program as the previous year. For Spirit of Daytona Racing he finished seventh in the DP rating of the Rolex Sports Car Series. With Corvette Racing, he won the GTE-Pro classification of the Le Mans 24 Hours together with Olivier Beretta and Tommy Milner .

In 2012, García won two races in the Rolex Sports Car Series for Spirit of Daytona Racing and was 13th in the DP class. In the ALMS he achieved third place in the GT classification for Corvette Racing together with Magnussen. He also worked for Corvette Racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . In 2013, García and Magnussen achieved overall victory in the GT classification of the ALMS for Corvette Racing. The two achieved three class wins. García also competed for Corvette Racing in the Le Mans 24-hour race . In the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2013 García drove two races in the DP class for Spirit of Daytona Racing and one race in the GT category for Stevenson Motorsports .

In 2014 , the ALMS and the Rolex Sports Car Series merged to form the United SportsCar Championship (USCC). García competed in this championship for Corvette Racing. Together with Magnussen, he won the GTLM class four times. García finished the season in third place in the GTLM class. Since Magnussen was represented in a race by Jordan Taylor , García occupied this position without his teammate. He also contested the Le Mans 24-hour race for Corvette Racing. Together with Magnussen and Taylor, he was second in the GTE-Pro classification. In addition, García returned to Formula racing and Campos at the end of 2014 after more than ten years. He took part in two races of the FIA Formula E championship for the NEXTEV TCR Formula E team supervised by Campos .
