Track plan of the airport loop with its connection to the high-speed line

The Cologne / Bonn Airport train station is a German airport train station for connecting Cologne / Bonn Airport to the rail network. The station, built as part of the high-speed route Cologne – Rhein / Main , is served by Intercity Express , S-Bahn and regional trains. The train station, which opened in June 2004, is part of the approximately 15-kilometer-long airport loop .

The Cologne / Bonn airport after Frankfurt Airport and Dusseldorf Airport , the third German airport with connection to the ICE network . In the meantime, Leipzig / Halle Airport had also been connected to the ICE network, but this no longer exists since the end of 2017.

The tunnel station , which is around 420 meters long and 40 meters wide , is classified in station category 3 by DB Station & Service .

The four tracks are 18 meters below the surface of the earth.

In 2002, the planned construction costs of the station were 58.3 million euros. They were raised by the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Flughafen Köln / Bonn GmbH. Overall, as part of the Bonn-Berlin Compensation , the federal government contributed around 255 million euros to the costs of the airport loop and the train station.

construction

Under a vaulted glass roof are two platforms with two tracks each between exposed concrete walls . A large glass staircase in the middle of the platforms is used to change platforms and leads to one of the emergency exits. Escalators and elevators lead from the platform to the basement of Terminal 2. In order to ensure a level entry with different car materials, the difference in height between the top edge of the rail and the platform edge is 76 centimeters on the outer tracks and 96 centimeters on the inner, slightly lower, for the S-Bahn . For operational reasons, it cannot be avoided that the high S-Bahn cars sometimes stop at low, outer platform edges.

The two central platforms are 405 meters long and 9.40 meters wide.

Between the two continuous main tracks, there is a double track change at the northern end of the station, but south of the threading of the two outer platform tracks, which is used by ICE trains ending at this station.

The transition area between the two airport terminals running above the station is spanned over a length of 156 meters with a 36-meter-wide steel and glass roof. The 540-ton roof covers an area of 6100 square meters.

In June 2007, a two-storey connecting structure made of steel and glass with a facade area of 1400 square meters to check-in area B in Terminal 1 was completed at the southern end of the station . There was previously only a temporary exit next to the access road, which is why the path leads a short distance through the open. Two escalators and an elevator were built during the construction work.

There are alternating signs for Cologne / Bonn Airport and Cologne / Bonn Airport on the platforms .

history

background

The connection of the airport was proposed by the federal government on December 20, 1989 as part of the fundamental decision for a route to the right of the Rhine for the new line.

It also goes back to the Berlin / Bonn Act of April 26, 1994, which provided for compensation payments for the Bonn region for the move of parliament and parts of the federal government to Berlin . With the construction, the intermodality in the transport network is to be strengthened, the operators of the airport are hoping for further increases, among other things in the number of passengers. Originally, the station was to be built as a closed tunnel, as in the competition design, but was instead designed with a large glass roof. Nevertheless, it is a tunnel station and is also referred to as such by Deutsche Bahn. Smoking is not permitted with reference to the property as a tunnel station.

After the airport was initially only accessible by road, around 90 percent of passengers traveled by car in 1996. Traffic forecasts expected that every third passenger would come to the airport by train. Around 10,000 commuters who should work at the airport in the future should also switch to rail in some cases. In addition, short-haul flights should be shifted to the “fast track”. In addition to the S-Bahn, two ICE trains an hour should stop at the airport.

Around 1996 the airport train station was part of a DM 600 million "Terminal 2" investment package that was to be financed by the airport.

planning

The building was planned by the architects Murphy / Jahn , based on whose designs Terminal 2 had already been built.

With the opening of the new Cologne – Rhein / Main line, two ICE and three S-Bahn trains per hour and direction were to run via the station. According to the expectations of 1995, around 30 percent of air travelers should travel to the airport by rail in the future.

The opening was planned for 1996 in 2000.

construction

The station was built in three construction phases. In the middle section, the construction workers encountered lignite and gravel while excavating, which could be used directly as building material to save building costs.

After the station heads had been created in the course of extensions or new construction measures at the airport, the creation of the aesthetically more sophisticated middle section began in autumn 2001. On January 29, 2002, Norbert Rüther , Ernst Schwanhold , Hartmut Mehdorn and Angelika Mertens broke the first symbolic groundbreaking . The opening took place on June 12, 2004 in the presence of Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder .

From May 2006 to June 2007 a connection between the train station and Terminal 1 was built. DB Netz AG was the owner of the six million euro project . The Murphy / Jahn architects' office was again commissioned with the extension.

For the airport, the construction of the train station was the last component of the more than 500 million euro Terminal 2000 concept . The catchment area of the airport has increased with the new train station to more than 20 million people.

business

In 2007 the number of daily ICE trains was reduced from eight to six pairs of trains due to low demand. In 2016, 17 pairs of trains run every working day.

S-Bahn connection

Since the construction of the airport loop was largely financed by the compensation funds of the Berlin / Bonn law, the Bonn / Rhine-Sieg region in particular should be connected to the airport. So far, only Cologne and - from the Rhein-Sieg district of Troisdorf  - with the S 13 have an unrestricted S-Bahn connection to the airport. Since mid-December 2013, individual trains of the S 13 have been running in the morning rush hour and since mid-December 2014 also in the afternoon rush hour (as line S 19) via Siegburg to Hennef. Since mid-December 2015, the S 19 has been running every hour from Monday to Friday.

Along the right Rhine route (Cologne – Troisdorf – Bonn-Beuel) there is only an hourly cycle to the airport train station with the Rhein-Erft-Bahn (RB 27). More frequent connections are not possible here as the route is heavily used by freight traffic. Along the route from Troisdorf to Bonn-Oberkassel , one, in some places two, new tracks are being built to extend the S 13 to Oberkassel, which previously ran from Düren via Cologne Hbf and the airport to Troisdorf. After agreement on the financing, the start of construction was planned for 2017, interim commissioning (up to Bonn-Beuel) in 2027 and full commissioning by 2029 were therefore possible. Construction work began on November 29, 2016.
