The Low Beskid ( Slovak Nízke Beskydy , Ukrainian Низькі Бескиди ) or Mittelbeskiden ( Polish Beskidy Środkowe , Ukrainian Центральні Бескиди ) are a mountain range in eastern Slovakia as well as in southeastern Poland (voivodships Lesser Poland and Subcarpathian ). They form the westernmost part of the Outer Eastern Carpathians . Its highest peak is the Busov with 1002 m.

The area known as Nízke Beskydy (Lower Beskydy) in Slovak and Beskidy Środkowe (Middle Beskydy) in Polish is divided into five mountain ranges:

The Lower Beskids are limited

character

The Lower Beskids are characterized by mostly gentle hills; the main ridge of the Carpathian Mountains is quite low here. The mountains are mostly forested. The highest point is the Busov with 1002 meters, in the Polish part of the border mountain Lackowa with 997 m.

In the Low Beskid the traditional settlement area lies Lemken (an East Slavic ethnic group), also Lemkivshchyna ( Lemkowyna or Łemkowszczyzna is called).

The mountains are popular but not overcrowded hiking areas. The European long-distance hiking trail E8 leads through the region . This begins in Čergov and leads via Bardejov , Dukla ( Red Route POL Szlak czerwony.svg ) over the Pasmo Bukowicy ridge to the Beskydy Mountains .

Attractions

The region is characterized by a large number of wooden churches , the most famous of which are in Kožany , Tročany , Hervartov , Krajná Poľana , Brežany , Kwiatoń , Owczary , Bartne , Kotań , Sękowa and Szymbark . In the Lower Beskids lies the Duklapass , an important Carpathian crossing and the scene of fierce fighting in numerous conflicts, including the First and Second World Wars. One consequence are the numerous military cemeteries from the First World War. Other tourist attractions are the old town of Bardejov and the Zborov Castle .

In the Lower Beskids there is the Magura National Park , the only Polish national park to be found in two voivodships, as well as the Jaśliski Landscape Park and several nature reserves.
