Saint-Martin-de-Bienfaite- la-Cressonnière is a French municipality with 452 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Lisieux and the canton of Livarot .

history

Bienfaite (the medieval name) was a Norman fiefdom that was owned by the Clare family , a branch of the Rollonids , in the 11th and 12th centuries . The most important owner was Richard de Bienfaite († 1090), who was temporarily regent of England. At the end of the 12th century, Bienfaite was married to William Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke . When Normandy was conquered by King Philip II Augustus , it fell to France in 1204.
