Charles Edward "Mean Joe" Greene (* 24. September 1946 in Elgin , Texas ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the defensive tackles . He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL).

Joe Greene was born in Elgin but grew up in Temple , Texas. His mother was a single parent. He attended high school in Temple and stood out for his height of 190 cm. He already played football in high school. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of North Texas .

Player career

College career

Charles Greene studied at the University of North Texas from 1966 to 1968. The 193 cm tall Greene played as a defensive tackle on the local college team , the North Texas Mean Green . In 1967 he and his team won the Conference Championship. In 1968 he was voted All American for his athletic achievements and played in the East-West Shrine Game , a selection game of the best college football players.

Professional career

In 1969 Chuck Noll had taken over the coaching position with the Pittsburgh Steelers . The Steelers had been one of the worst teams in the NFL in previous years. They drafted Joe Greene in fourth place in the first round in 1969. Greene was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first year , but his team was unsuccessful. The team won only one of 14 games. The team's failure did not last long. In the next few years, numerous promising young players such as Jack Ham , Lynn Swann , Mel Blount or John Stallworth were hired , the Steelers developed into a top team in the NFL. Greene was used as a defensive tackle, the defensive line of the Steelers should acquire a legendary reputation by their achievements and as "Steel Curtain" (German Steel Curtain, as intensified form of the Iron Curtain , the Iron Curtain ) go down in the history of the NFL.

After Greene and his team were able to move into the play-offs in 1972 and 1973 , but never won championship honors, their first major success came in 1974. The Steelers had the AFC Championship Game by John Madden supervised Oakland Raiders defeated with 24:13 and were therefore in the Super Bowl IX confiscated. Greene was able to bring down their quarterback Ken Stabler behind the line of scrimmage in the game against the Raiders and thus contribute to the success of his team. He and his team then won the Super Bowl against the Minnesota Vikings 16-6 . Greene was able to intercept a pass from quarterback Fran Tarkenton in the game . In the following year, Greene managed to defend his title with the team from Pittsburgh . In the AFC Championship Game the Raiders were defeated again, this time with 16:10. Opponents in the subsequent Super Bowl X were the Dallas Cowboys trained by Tom Landry , who had to admit defeat to the Steelers with 21:17.

In the years that followed, the Steelers remained a top team in the NFL. 1978 Joe Greene was able to win his third Super Bowl. The Steelers had to deal with the Houston Oilers in the AFC Championship Game , but they had no chance against Greene's team in their 34: 5 defeat. Greene was able to score an interception again in the game . His team met the Cowboys again in Super Bowl XIII . The defense of Jack Ham, Mel Blount and Greene managed in the game to keep the quarterback of the team from Dallas Roger Staubach under control until the middle of the fourth quarter of the game. Greene scored a sack against Staubach. The Steelers were leading 35:17 by then and already looked like the sure winner. However, Staubach was able to throw two touchdown passes within a very short time , which in the end did not change the 35:31 defeat of his team. In 1979 Joe Greene celebrated the fourth Super Bowl success. In the AFC championship game he met his team again on the Oilers, who had to leave the field with a 27:13 defeat. The Los Angeles Rams were the opponents in Super Bowl XIV this time and had to admit defeat to the Steelers with 31:19.

Joe Greene ended his playing career in 1981.

After the playing career

Greene initially worked from 1982 for a year as a television presenter for CBS . In 1987, he accepted an offer from Noll and became an assistant coach with the Steelers. He also held the same position from 1992 to 1995 with the Miami Dolphins and from 1996 to 2003 with the Arizona Cardinals . In 2004 he returned to the Steelers and became an assistant to the human resources office and was responsible for player affairs. During that time, the Steelers won Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII . Even during his playing career, Greene repeatedly appeared in supporting roles in Hollywood films and television productions.

Honors

"Mean Joe" Greene played ten times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was named All-Pro eight times , NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice, and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1969. He is a member of the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team , the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , the Texas Sports Hall of Fame , the East-West Shrine Game Hall of Fame, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame , as well as the College Football Hall of Fame . His number 75 shirt is no longer used at his college or the Pittsburgh Steelers . The Steelers officially retired his number in the home game against the Baltimore Ravens on November 2, 2014. In 1979 he received the NFL Man of the Year Award . In 1999, The Sporting News magazine ranked him 14th of the Top 100 Football Players of All Time. His nickname "Mean Joe" was given to him by fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers in reference to the name of his college team.
