action

In 1873, in the remote small town of Absolution, Arizona , a mysterious stranger with no name and no memory appears, wearing a strange metal cuff on his forearm and suffering from an unusual stomach injury. During an argument with Percy Dolarhyde, the trigger-happy son of the local cattle baron, a deputy sheriff is shot and Percy is arrested by Sheriff John Taggart. Using a profile, he finds out that the stranger is the wanted criminal Jake Lonergan, and arrests him too.

The sheriff wants to hand the two prisoners over to the judge in Santa Fe in a carriage. Shortly before departure, Woodrow Dolarhyde, known as "Colonel", appears with his men in town. He asks the sheriff to hand over his son and Jake Lonergan, who robbed one of his stagecoaches, to him. Just before the conflict breaks out, strange lights appear on the horizon that are rapidly approaching.

These turn out to be objects in flight that open fire. In the wild confusion, the flying objects hurl a kind of lasso at some people, pull them into the air and drag them away, including Sheriff Taggert, Percy Dolarhyde and Maria, the wife of the "Docs". Suddenly Lonergan's arm cuff becomes active and reveals a kind of holographic display. Lonergan can shoot down an aircraft with the cuff and thus stop the attack, but the non-human pilot escapes.

The next morning, some of the residents set off to follow the pilot's trail and to free the kidnapped people. After initial hesitation, Lonergan also rides when he remembers that the " demons ", as the attackers are called, were responsible for the disappearance of his girlfriend Alice in the past. After a long ride, they lose track in the heavy rain.

In the night camp, the mysterious Ella Swenson asks Jake again for help, just as she had previously done in town, but Jake doesn't understand why she turns to him of all people. Suddenly Jake's arm cuff flashes and they realize that the pilot must be nearby. He attacks the group, but can be scared away by Jake. After the group sees the attacker, a clawed monster, for the first time, Dolarhyde's men run away. This leaves only Jake, the Colonel, Ella, the Doc and a few others who go back to chase the next morning.

In a ravine, the group is ambushed by bandits who turn out to be Jake's former gang. In their camp, the new gang leader beats up Jake, but Jake kills him with his arm cuff. The small group flees on horseback and is pursued by the bandits when some aircraft attack and kidnap more people, including Ella. Jake jumps from the edge of a canyon onto the aircraft, crashing it into a river and freeing Ella, but the alien pilot seriously injures Ella before Jake shoots him with the cuff. Ella dies in Jake's arms.

Immediately afterwards the group of Indians is surrounded and taken prisoner. Ella's corpse is burned in the Indian camp and the Indians are preparing to kill the prisoners, as they blame them for the appearance of the "demons". Suddenly the fire flares up and out of it rises the "reborn" Ella, who is obviously also an alien. She says that she is the last survivor of a people whose planet was invaded by the monsters. She came to earth in human form to prevent humanity from being wiped out by the "demons" as well. These are an alien scouting party in search of gold that will soon return to their people and then be invaded. They are conducting experiments with the abducted people, so there may still be some alive. A shaman helps Jake fill the gaps in his memory. Jake remembers the location of the alien spaceship and how his friend Alice was killed by the aliens in an experiment just before he was able to escape with the cuff himself.

After Jake has convinced his former gang to rejoin him in the face of the impending extinction of mankind, they attack the alien spaceship, which is half hidden in the earth, together with the Indians. They climb up the spaceship and destroy the hangar of the aircraft with dynamite , so that the aliens can no longer attack from the air. Then some aliens storm out of the spaceship and attack the humans.

Meanwhile, Jake and Ella sneak under the spaceship through the same cave that Jake used to escape from the aliens. You will find the kidnapped people who look into a light as if hypnotized. When Ella destroys the light, the people slowly come to and escape through the cave into the open. Ella wants to stop the aliens for good. She says goodbye to Jake and climbs to the center of the spaceship with his arm cuff. Jake, who is attacked by an alien, manages to escape from the spaceship with the help of the Colonel, shortly before it ignites its engines.

People suffered significant losses fighting outdoors, but have since gained the upper hand. The aliens take off with their spaceship and quickly gain altitude. Ella has meanwhile reached the ship's power source. She sacrifices herself by triggering an explosion with the arm cuff that destroys the ship in the air. The liberated get together with their loved ones and slowly seem to be regaining their memories. Later in town, the Colonel tries to persuade Jake to stay, but Jake refuses and rides out of town alone.

Effects

Cowboys & Aliens, along with Fright Night and I'm Number Four, are one of the films that didn't have the box office success they had hoped for, which meant that at the end of 2011 the DreamWorks studio was in dire financial straits.

criticism

"Explosive and entertaining genre mix with powerful star power, but a little more humor would not have hurt"

“A good-humored invasion of science fiction motifs into the Western genre, which lovingly and nostalgically builds up character types and lines of conflict in the Western in order to confront them with elements of contemporary cinema with effects. The film can rely on a solid dramaturgy of tension, charismatic figures and impressive camera work. "

“[It seems ...] initially puzzling that more than a hundred years had to pass before western and science fiction merged. But if you 've seen the film Cowboys & Aliens [...] you know why: The two genres just don't go together, like humans and Klingons . A mash-up of men on horseback and flying saucers could have been a lot of fun, like Tim Burton with his sci-fi grotesque Mars Attacks! proved where the green men burst to hillbilly music in the end. Unfortunately, director Jon Favreau is very serious that his film adaptation of a graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg was supposed to be just as thundering, thundering, and ending in a big computer effects spectacle as his Iron Man films . But what went wrong. "
