The GDR Oberliga 1976/77 was the 28th edition of the top division of the GDR . The championship was for the fifth time the SG Dynamo Dresden , which defended its title from the previous season. The season began on September 4, 1976 and ended on May 21, 1977.
Season course
For the last time in the history of the league, the league was dominated by the three clubs from Jena, Dresden and Magdeburg. In the end, Dresden was champion and thus defended its previous year's title, while Magdeburg and Jena placed behind. The decision for the championship was made on matchday 25 in a direct duel between Magdeburg and Dresden. The three points worse placed Magdeburg would have needed a win to be dangerous to Dresden on the last day of the game. But in front of their home crowd, 1. FC did not get past a 0-0 draw, which marked Dresden's fifth championship. On the last day of the match, Jena slipped past BFC Dynamo into third place and qualified for the UEFA Cup .
The fight against relegation was exciting. Before the last match day, six teams were threatened with relegation: Wismut Aue, Sachsenring Zwickau, Union Berlin, Stahl Riesa, Forward Frankfurt and Hansa Rostock. Aue (1: 1 in Erfurt) and Zwickau (6: 2 against Halle) saved themselves on their own, while Union (1: 1 against Magdeburg) and Frankfurt (2: 0 against Karl-Marx-Stadt) benefited from each other Rostock and Riesa only separated 0-0 in the direct relegation duel. The result did not help both teams and so Riesa rose after four years of membership in the second and the promoted Rostock for the third time from the league.

FDGB Cup
The FDGB-Pokal was won this season by the champions Dynamo Dresden, who achieved a double for the second time since 1971 . In the final, Dresden won against the defending champion 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, who nevertheless qualified for the international competition by participating in the final.
International competitions
The European Cup season was very different for the individual GDR participants. While Lokomotive Leipzig (in the European Cup Winners' Cup against Heart of Midlothian ) and BFC Dynamo (in the UEFA Cup against Shakhtar Donetsk ) were eliminated in the first round, Dynamo Dresden (in the European Cup against Heart of Midlothian ) and Magdeburg (in the UEFA Cup ) to the quarter-finals. Dresden was eliminated due to the away goals rule against FC Zurich , while Magdeburg lost twice to the eventual cup winners Juventus Turin . The 1976 Intertoto Cup took place again without GDR participation.
