← GDR football league 1987/88 | |
The GDR Oberliga 1988/89 was the 40th edition of the top division of the GDR . Master was SG Dynamo Dresden . It was the seventh championship for Dynamo Dresden after 1953, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977 and 1978.
Season course
The championship question was already decided after the 23rd match day, when the main pursuer, the Berlin FC Dynamo , lost 4-2 at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and Dynamo Dresden lost the last necessary point with a 2-2 draw at FC Hansa Rostock Championship win. With the Dresden title win, the years of national dominance of the BFC Dynamo came to an end, which had won the championship ten times in a row, but only reached the runner-up this season.
However, the Berliners succeeded in winning the FDGB Cup with a 1-0 victory in the final against FC Karl-Marx-Stadt . The Karl-Marx-Städter moved into the UEFA Cup together with Hansa Rostock .
After four years of first-class performance, 1. FC Union Berlin and the newcomer BSG Sachsenring Zwickau had to relegate to the GDR league .
At the end of the season, Dresden's Torsten Gütschow headed the list of goalscorers ahead of his teammate Ulf Kirsten .
