Beyoncé sings the theme song Dangerously in Love 2 .
Beyoncé sings Baby Boy .

Dangerously in Love is the solo debut of the American R&B singer Beyoncé . It was released in June 2003 by their record company Columbia Records . Knowles recorded the album from 2002 to 2003 while her girl group Destiny’s Child was on hiatus. The album contains influences from soul and R&B music as well as elements from hip-hop and oriental music .

For Knowles, Dangerously in Love was the final breakthrough as a solo artist. The album was successful worldwide. In the United States and the United Kingdom, the album went straight to number one on the charts. With more than eleven million copies sold worldwide, the album is considered one of the most successful albums of 2003.

A total of five singles were extracted from this : the No. 1 hit Crazy in Love with Jay-Z , Baby Boy in a duet with Sean Paul , Me, Myself and I , '03 Bonnie & Clyde and Naughty Girl . The title track Dangerously in Love was also released as a radio single in the USA .

In 2004 the album and its singles were awarded five Grammys , among other things .

background

Knowles began her career in the late 1990s as the lead singer for the contemporary R&B group Destiny's Child. According to MTV News' Corey Moss, fans wanted to see Knowles as a solo singer as well. While the girl group was recording their third album Survivor in late 2000 , Knowles announced that the group would be taking a break so the singers could devote themselves to solo projects. This idea came from Knowles' father, Mathew Knowles, the manager of the group.

Michelle Williams first released her solo debut Heart to Yours in April 2002 . Meanwhile, Knowles dabbled in the comedy Austin Powers in Goldmember and recorded her first solo single Work It Out , which appeared on the film's soundtrack . Kelly Rowland worked with American rapper Nelly on his single Dilemma , which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks in the United States . Her solo album Simply Deep was released in 2002. Knowles was also seen as an actress in Fighting Temptations and recorded another single. In 2002, Knowles worked with her then boyfriend Jay-Z on his hit '03 Bonnie & Clyde , which reached number four in the US and became a number one hit in Switzerland . The song also made Knowles known as a solo artist, and she subsequently began recording the album Dangerously in Love .

admission

Before Knowles began working on Dangerously in Love , she selected the producers she wanted to work with. For two days, Knowles had appointments and discussions with producers on the west and east coasts of America. Knowles began with the first shooting in Miami ( Florida ). There she worked with Canadian producer Scott Storch , the first producer she chose for her album. For the months that followed, she lived in a Miami hotel near the recording studio.

As with Survivor , Knowles took over parts of the production for Dangerously in Love . She co-wrote most of the songs and decided how they were produced and mixed . Even if she is not responsible for the rhythms of the album, she got involved in the melodies of the songs and convinced the producers of her ideas. For this she is considered a co-writer and co-producer of the album. She is also named as executive producer alongside her father, Matthew Knowles. A total of 43 songs were recorded, with only 15 making it onto the final version of the album.

According to Knowles, recording the songs without their group members felt "liberating and therapeutic". The dependence on Destiny's Child made it harder for Knowles to keep "her creativity as a solo artist". So that Knowles was also successful as a solo artist, she looked for other artists who showed interest in working with her. After the recordings were finished, Knowles sent copies of the recordings to the guest artists Knowles wanted to work with on the songs. In addition to Jay-Z, Knowles also got the opportunity to work with the Jamaican dancehall musician Sean Paul and the American rapper Missy Elliott . Knowles also worked with Timbaland on the song Wrapped Around Me , which, for unknown reasons, did not make it onto the final album version.

The album name Dangerously in Love is based on a song of the same title that Knowles had already written for Survivor . However, Dangerously in Love was too different from the other songs on the Destiny's Child album. So it was taken on the album, but the group decided not to release the song as a single. After Knowles started working on her debut album, she decided to use the song again. Originally the album was supposed to be released as competition to Kelly Rowland's Dilemma album. However, Knowles failed to do this because she did not want to dispute Rowland's solo success, so Knowles had more time to work on the album. This also allowed her to record more songs, including the first single Crazy in Love . In late 2002, Knowles took a break from work on Dangerously in Love to go on a Christmas tour with Destiny's Child. After a few months, Knowles began working on her album again in March 2003 and recorded songs with Sean Paul and P. Diddy , among others .

music

Knowles' father and manager said Dangerously in Love shows her musical roots. While Williams and Rowland published more gospel and pop music, Knowles focused on contemporary R&B music. The album focuses on faster R&B pieces and club-oriented songs, as well as ballads and quieter slow-jam tracks in the second half. Knowles said that her album strikes a good balance between ballads and faster tracks. Overall, however, there are significantly more ballads represented on the album.

According to Knowles, she wanted to see herself accepted as a real artist with the album. That's why there were a lot of musical influences and genres on the album. It contains contemporary R&B , hip hop / rap , soul , and rock influences. The hip-hop influences come from Jay-Z, OutKast , Missy Elliott and Lil 'Kim ; the reggae influences of Sean Paul; and thanks to the Storch producers, the album also contains influences from oriental and arabic music . His work on the album gives the work an influence also from Middle Eastern music . For the versatility of the music, Knowles and their producers used many different musical instruments for the music.

Content and interpretations

When '03 Bonnie & Clyde was released as a single in late 2002, critics speculated that Knowles and Jay-Z were dating. Despite many rumors, Knowles and Jay-Z did not reveal anything about a relationship. Nevertheless, there are hints on the album: In the song Signs , Knowles sings about being in love with someone who is a Sagittarius zodiac sign . Jay-Z has this zodiac sign.

Knowles said that Dangerously in Love was comparable in content to the Destiny's Child albums. But since Knowles only had to write for herself, she had the opportunity to deal with more personal topics on the album. In addition to a piece that describes the different stages of a romantic relationship, Dangerously in Love contains songs that are about love and honesty.

While some songs focus on the "beauty of love", the album also deals with other topics such as "separation" and "control". Beyoncé pays tribute to her father and manager with the song Daddy (with cellist Nioka Workman ). The song also expresses Beyoncé's wish that her future husband should have the same skills and qualities as her father. Originally it wasn't supposed to be on the album because it could make her seem infantile, but eventually she decided to end the album with this song.

reception

The website Metacritic .com determined for Dangerously in Love an average rating of 64 out of 100, based on 16 reviews. Entertainment Weekly gave the album an A- and wrote that the album confirms the singer's taste for innovation . Allmusic rated Dangerously in Love four out of five stars. Stephen Thomas Erlewine called the record one of the best "mainstream R&B" records of 2003, especially because of the first half.

"Still, the first half is good enough to make Dangerously in Love one of the best mainstream urban R&B records released in 2003."
