The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1983 took place under the title Ein Lied für München .
Carolin Reiber , who moderated the preliminary round in previous years , led the show .

The Bayerische Rundfunk retained the mode of previous years due to the success of Genghis Khan , Katja Ebstein , Lena Valaitis and the victory by Nicole in the previous year.
A jury of thirteen professionals from the entertainment industry selected the 24 semi-finalists from 735 submissions, from which the radio listeners chose the 12 finalists.
After the preliminary decision, which this year took place five weeks before the Eurovision Song Contest , 500 representative radio listeners and television viewers were interviewed by telephone after the twelve titles had run through the polling institute Infratest . During the broadcast, they had to rate the twelve titles using a given point scale.
