The good hiking map
The publication series The Good Hiking Map was published between 1948 and 1961 and was the most popular hiking map series in the GDR in its time .
history
The Saxony Verlag Dresden began in 1948 with the publication of maps, the first the near and Dresden covering and the series name The Good hiking map received. As early as 1951, the series was taken over by the VEB Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig and expanded considerably. Apart from the titles Buckow und Umgebung (only edition in 1952) and Rostock und Umgebung , the publication focus was on Saxony , Thuringia and the Harz . In the years 1954 to 1956, 24 partial maps of a Thuringia series with a scale of 1: 40,000 were published, which were edited in cooperation with VEB Kartographie Leipzig . In 1956 numbering was introduced. Up to 1960 a total of 66 different cards, re-editions and revisions were not included. The cartographic processing was carried out by various companies (including the printing company "Berthold Haupt", Dresden; VEB Hermann Haack , Gotha; Velhagen & Klasing , Leipzig; Carl Opitz, Leipzig), so that in some cases different signatures were used and there were considerable differences in the map image .
In the course of profiling the GDR publishers, the traveling literature department of the Bibliographical Institute was closed in 1960; the hiking maps were handed over to VEB Landkartenverlag Berlin , which initially continued the series in part, but soon integrated it into its own publishing program, dispensing with the concise green and white layout and the series name. Maps showing the border regions to the Federal Republic have been removed from the program. After the GDR government decided in 1964/65 that, for reasons of secrecy, it would no longer be possible to publish precise maps for the public in the future, the hiking map program had to be completely reworked using a falsified base map. The last new editions of the Good Hiking Map appeared in 1967.

Reprints
Between 1961 and 1989 no detailed cartographic representations of the areas on the inner-German border could be published in the GDR. In order to be able to meet the demand for the corresponding map material that began with the turnaround , Tourist Verlag decided to reprint some maps from the years 1954 to 1960 as part of the Tourist Reprint series , which also includes some titles from the Good Hiking Map (No. 13 , 100, 101, 102 and 111).
