The Division 2 1950/51 was the twelfth host the second highest French football league . Olympique Lyon became second division champions .

societies

Eligible to participate were the 16 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division after the previous season or had given up their professional status - voluntarily or by force. There were also two first division relegated teams. Lyon Olympique Universitaire had ceded its place to the newly founded association Olympique Lyon.

Thus, the following 18 teams played for the division 2 championship this season :

Before the Second World War, there was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division; thereafter a relegation to the third highest division had been introduced over a few years. In addition, a second division could be relegated if he gave up his license or if it was revoked. Previous amateur teams, on the other hand, could only continue to move up to Division 2 for the following season if they received approval from the responsible association FFF to assume professional status.
In return, there was a relegation round for the first time this season between the two worst-placed first division teams, who did not have to be relegated directly, and the two best second division teams who were not directly eligible for promotion.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

The big surprise of the season was the “newcomer with an old license” from Lyon, who managed to get promoted promptly after a comparatively confident season. The team left relegated Metz, who immediately returned to Division 1 , behind them and in the end showed a safe distance to third in the table from Rouen. The Normans were denied promotion in the subsequent barrages, as was the fourth-placed team from Besançon.

During the first half of the season, Marseille withdrew from the game and gave up his professional status after almost a year and a half; his games played up to then were not counted. In the basement of the table there was a four-way fight with a wafer-thin outcome - the three weakest teams were only separated by the goal difference - with Cercle Athlétique , the traditional club from Paris, taking one of the last two places for the fourth time in a row.

876 hits were scored in the 272 encounters; this corresponds to an average of 3.2 goals per game. Thadée Cisowski (Metz) won the top scorer's crown with 23 goals. The following season came from the top division of Toulouse FC and Stade Français Paris ; in addition, the federation granted FC Grenoble a new license.

    Relegation round

After the end of the season, Rouen and Besançon had the chance to qualify for promotion to Division 1 in the Barrages . These games were played in a simple round of points in each case on a neutral place. In the end, however, the two higher-class teams from Lens and Sète prevailed. There were no matches between teams from the same league.
