Ketteler later also Kettler is the name of an old Westphalian noble family . They belonged to the ministerial nobility . Their headquarters in Hüsten is today a district of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerland district . The family first appears in a document in 1210 with the castle man Lambertus de Hustene . His descendant Conrad von Hüsten appears since 1318 with the nickname dictus Keteler or de Keteler , which translates as Kesselmacher . Until 1368 the Kettelers were vassals of the then powerful Counts of Arnsberg . From 1561 to 1711 the family provided the ruling dukes , with Ferdinand Kettler formally even until 1737 the dukes of Courland and Zemgale .

Rotger II. Ketteler (around 1312 – before 1378) came from the first marriage of Conrad III. He lived on Hachen and was married to Elisabeth Vollenspit . Their sons were called Conrad Munking and Rotger.

Conrad Munking Ketteler (* around 1370) inherited Borghausen, where he died after 1423. His younger brother Friedrich (* around 1380, † before 1462) took over the Kettelburg built between Hüsten and Herdringen in 1411 from his uncle Dietrich Ketteler, a cousin of his father , after disputes about inheritance . Around 1419 he married Hilleke von Melschede .

This ended the line of the Kettelers zu Hüsten and the Kettelburg became the property of the von Hanxleden family. Elisabeth died in Hanxleden's castle in Körtlinghausen .

Ottilie von Ketteler finally inherited the estates at Assen and Hovestadt and brought them into the marriage to her husband Gottfried von der Heyden from the line at Haus Bruch in 1653/68 . After inheritance disputes could not be settled, Heinrich von Galen bought Haus Assen in 1653, and it remained in his family until 1997.
