mode
The mode for the league was determined that after the preliminary round, which was played out as a double round, the participants in places 1 to 8 of the Oberliga Süd and Oberliga Nord take part in the promotion playoffs. The participants in places 9 to 12 of the Oberliga Süd then took part in the qualifying playoffs against the top 4 of the Regionalliga Süd . The teams in positions 9 to 12 of the Oberliga Nord should take part in playdowns to determine a sporting relegation.
Season course
Before the season, Braunlager EHC / Harz was dissolved and Braunlager SC / Harz was reactivated, which continued to play in the lowest league of the Lower Saxony State Ice Sports Association - the Lower Saxony League. Instead of the EC Atlantis Ulm / Neu-Ulm , which was under insolvency administration , the EC Atlantis Ulm / Neu-Ulm was founded, which continued to play in the lowest league of the Baden-Württemberg Ice Sports Association - here the Baden-Württemberg State League. The team of Jungadler Mannheim was regrouped from the Oberliga Nord to the Regionalliga Süd .
Towards the end of October 2000, the Gelsenkirchen EC Schalker Haie was excluded from the Oberliga Nord, because the team had not played a game twice in a row. All of the team's games were removed from the table and the playdowns provided after the Oberliga Nord was over.
In the promotion playoffs to the 2nd Bundesliga 2001/02 the EV Regensburg and the EHC Wolfsburg prevailed. In the qualification playoffs between the participants of the Oberliga Süd and those of the Regionalliga Süd, the participants of the Oberliga Süd prevailed. The joint final round of the regional leagues in the north was won by SC Mittelrhein in Neuwied , who was also champion of the Hessen / Rhineland-Palatinate regional league, and rose to the 2001/02 Oberliga .
