Einbecker Owl Festival
The Einbeck Owl Festival is a city festival celebrated annually on the second weekend in October in the southern Lower Saxony city of Einbeck .
history
At Pentecost, a city festival was held from May 31 to June 2, 1974 as " Eulenspiegelei - days of cordiality" between the market square and Einbeck Mitte station on the occasion of the partnership with the French city of Thiais in the Île-de-France region , which has existed since 1962 . Pop singer Billy Mo performed here. With the participation of the Einbeck advertising and park community, an annual traditional festival had to be established due to the good response to the city festival. The businessman Walter Schmalzried, junior manager of the department store Schünemann, referred to experiences from his Upper Swabian hometown Ravensburg, which organizes the rod festival. The wine merchant Rolf Bremeyer coined the advertising slogan “The owl is loose in Einbeck!”. In the summer of 1974, the preparations for a community festival began, supported by numerous participants, including city director Heinrich Keim, Claus Spörer, head of the local adult education center and Hans-Georg Wunram, editor of the Einbecker Morgenpost and, as organizer, Bruno Witte from Salzderhelden. The first "Einbeck Citizens' Festival" was held from November 9th to 12th, 1974, with Sunday shopping, which was very rare at the time. The attractions included numerous torches to illuminate the old defenses and a star march of around 800 small children to the market square. There were also several rides, auctions, a flea market, a beer trek, a vintage vehicle show, the shanty choir and music bands, a tattoo , carriage rides , a film festival. There was pea soup from the field kitchen of the German Red Cross (DRK). The 2nd Einbeck Citizens' Festival in November 1975 already resulted in a considerable flow of visitors. As a result, the Einbeck Citizens' Festival only became the "Owl Festival". Since 1977 the second weekend in October has been the fixed date for the city festival. Starting in 1982, a prominent musician was presented every year on Sunday shopping. Until 1992, the “Colorful Evening” in the Wilhelm Bendow theater on Hubeweg was part of the community festival. A Ferris wheel has been one of the rides on offer since October 1998, in 2017 with the new Hanse Wheel, which also presented itself as an ambassador for the Rostock 2018 Hanseatic Day.
Today the Owl Festival is essentially a small music festival, as only a few rides such as carousel or looping rides are allowed. The festival mile stretches from Tiedexer Tor to Möncheplatz, the former location of the Augustinian monastery . The main stage, moderated in 2014 by Rebecca Siemoneit-Barum , is located on the market square in front of the choir of the Marktkirche . There are also several side stages, for example on the back of the Old Town Hall . Traditionally, at the start of the festival, a tap of the bock beer from the Einbeck brewery takes place . With a visitor number of more than 100,000, it is the largest such festival in the southern Lower Saxony region.
