The Ferrari Enzo Ferrari was a super sports car built by the Italian manufacturer Ferrari between 2002 and 2004 . The Ferrari, at times the fastest on the road in terms of top speed, was named after the company's founder Enzo Ferrari . The models 250 GTO , 288 GTO , F40 and F50 are the direct and indirect predecessors of the Ferrari Enzo Ferrari . The successor is the Ferrari LaFerrari presented in 2013 .

This supercar was designed by Pininfarina and can be compared to vehicles like the Saleen S7 , McLaren F1 , Porsche Carrera GT , Koenigsegg CC8S as well as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren . The engine of the Enzo was also used in the MC12 of the subsidiary Maserati. There the V12 cylinder developed 465 kW. There was also a racing version of the Enzo called the Ferrari FXX . In the FXX, the engine developed 588 kW, in the evolution version even 632 kW.

The Enzo was originally announced as a limited production of 349 pieces. Ferrari sent out invitations to existing customers and all 349 cars were sold before production began. Later, after numerous inquiries, Ferrari decided to build 50 more Enzos, which brought the total production worldwide to 399 units. The basic price was around 662,000 euros, the retail price with accessories hovered around 700,000 euros. The purchase was only possible for selected people who had a longstanding relationship with Ferrari.

production

Before the start of production of the series model, three prototypes (M1, M2, and M3) were built for test purposes. The prototype M3 looked similar to a Ferrari 348 , although it was built in 2000.

When building has been Formula 1 -like technology used, for example, a body made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic , a sequential transmission, as well as carbon-ceramic brake discs . In addition, technologies were used that are not allowed in Formula 1: After the greatest downforce was reached at 295 km / h, a computer automatically reduces the downforce as the speed increases by moving some spoiler elements electrically.

On the in-house test track in Fiorano , Ferrari reported a lap time of 1: 22.3 minutes for the Enzo; thus the Enzo is around five seconds faster than its direct predecessor, the F50.

In March 2005 Ferrari announced that another Enzo would be built, making a total of 400 units. The car was solemnly handed over to Pope John Paul II on January 17, 2005, after which the Pope asked to auction the car as a donation for Caritas . The car was auctioned by Sotheby’s on June 28, 2005, and the proceeds went to benefit those who survived the 2004 tsunami . The car with the chassis number 141920 was sold for 1,055,000 euros. The third prototype was also auctioned with the 400th Enzo in June 2005 and brought in 195,500 euros.

In 2005, Ferrari launched a racing version based on the Enzo, which, however, has not been homologated for any FIA racing series and can therefore only be used in the context of special events such as the XX program , which is specially held for this purpose . Thirty copies of the 588 kW (800 hp) FXX were sold to selected customers; the last of them to Michael Schumacher . The price of around 1.5 million euros included driver safety training and several test drives on international racetracks.

In 2006, the American billionaire James Glickenhaus had an Enzo from Pininfarina converted into a Ferrari P4 / 5 .

Quotes

“The gap between this and the Mercedes-McLaren SLR is as wide as the gap between Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard . This is now the performance benchmark. This is the speed king. This is the division bell between the ordinary and the absolutely astonishing. "

“The gap between this car and the Mercedes-McLaren SLR is as big as the gap between Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. This is now the performance benchmark. This is the king of speed. This is Bell's division between the ordinary and the utterly amazing. "

- Jeremy Clarkson : Top Gear (Season 5, Episode 2)

“Big speeds are incredibly easy in the Enzo. It's like the car is covered in a special layer of Teflon, allowing it to slip effortlessly through the cool night air. In fact, this side of a Veyron , I can't think of a car that builds speed quite as easily as the Enzo. You do need to be alert, though, as it feels nervous at high speeds, thanks mainly to the ultra-sharp steering. "
