history

Some archaeological finds prove that there were numerous Etruscan-Roman settlements. According to legend, the name comes from the Longobard Allone di Lucca , which later became the place name Mons Allonis and then Montaione . At the beginning of the 13th century the fortified place as a castello belonged to San Miniato . In 1257 the place became a free municipality . In 1369 Montaione submitted to Florence. Gambassi was a district of Montaione until 1917, when the independent municipality of Gambassi Terme was founded. The medieval city walls were badly damaged by German mines in 1944. Both city gates and almost all defense towers fell victim to them.
